Cheng's free program is a strong first week of preparation. Many candidates today also meet a McKinsey Solve game, a BCG online case, or a one-way video before any human interview, and that stage is practised by sitting the format itself. One thing to check: the LOMS page says it is "Updated for the Latest Recruiting Season" and, further down, that it was updated "for the 2021 Recruiting Season". The page does not say which recordings changed when.

The core idea is good. You hear a strong candidate and a weak candidate work the same problem, and the difference between them becomes audible rather than theoretical. Most prep material shows you a polished model answer, which teaches you what to aim at but not what common mistakes sound like from the outside.

How much does Look Over My Shoulder cost?

The LOMS page states the payment plan; the version prices appear on the order form each version links to. Everything Victor Cheng is best known for in the free program costs nothing: about six hours of training video, the interactive math tool and framework PDFs. Work through that first; it will tell you whether the teaching style suits you before any paid decision.

Instruction is now widely available, much of it free. Providers differ most in how your own answer gets checked: by comparing with a recording or set answer, by a peer, by a human coach, or by AI grading of your answer.

What does Victor Cheng's material get right?

Teaching structure narration

The way you announce a structure, signpost movement between branches, and hand control back to the interviewer is a communication skill, and it survives changes in case format. LOMS teaches it well because it is the thing audio is suited to.

The free program as a foundation

For a candidate three weeks into thinking about consulting, six hours of clear video from a former McKinsey consultant at zero cost is hard to beat as a first input.

Hypothesis-driven thinking

The emphasis on leading with a hypothesis rather than exhaustively mapping every branch remains sound and remains something many candidates get wrong.

Hearing many candidates

LOMS lets you hear candidates of different levels on the same problems, with expert commentary. That range is hard to get from a single model answer.

What has changed in case interviews since LOMS was made?

Enough that it is worth pairing LOMS with practice in newer formats.

Two of those changes fall outside what an audio product covers: exhibit speed is a visual skill, and a digital screen is rehearsed by sitting one. What carries over fully is the part that was never about format: how you announce a structure, how you signpost, how you hand control back.

Where does LOMS fall short in 2026?

Listening does not practise exhibit speed

Modern cases are exhibit-heavy. Candidates are handed charts, asked to extract the insight, and judged on how quickly they get to it. The core LOMS experience is listening to someone else reason. If exhibit speed is your weak point, it is practised by reading charts yourself:

One commentator throughout

Every piece of commentary in LOMS comes from Victor Cheng, whose background is McKinsey. The Bain and BCG version covers those firms' formats, with the same commentator. Candidates who want a range of perspectives often add a coach or peers from other firms.

No interactive assessment simulators

LOMS does not include interactive simulators for McKinsey Solve, the BCG Consulting Career Assessment or one-way video. The $921 toolkit includes a legacy McKinsey Problem Solving Test toolkit, and the site has written articles on the BCG online case.

Coaching is listed as discontinued

The coaching page says "Case Interview Coaching is no longer available", while one order form still bundles a coaching session with LOMS for $497. Check with CaseInterview.com before buying that bundle for the session.

It is listening, not practice on your own answers

You can complete LOMS without having run a case yourself. That is the same pattern as reading case books: recognition improves faster than performance. Running cases with a partner (its partner finder helps) or on a graded platform is how you test which one you have.
