Case interview coaching: what a coach costs and when it is worth it

A case interview coach is a former consultant, ideally someone who interviewed candidates at McKinsey, BCG, Bain or your target firm, who runs live mock cases with you and scores you the way that firm does. On the eight coaching providers we checked on Nov 6, 2026, one hour costs about $100 to $350, and most candidates book 3 to 5 sessions. Coaching is worth it after about 10 practice cases, when the same mistake keeps coming back or a final round is close; before that, cheaper practice fixes more.

How much does a case interview coach cost?

Most providers charge $100 to $350 for a one-hour session, and marketplaces let each coach set a rate, from $59 to $399 an hour on Leland. Three one-hour sessions therefore cost about $300 to $1,050.

Is case interview coaching worth it?

Coaching is worth it once you know the case method and keep losing points the same way, or when a final round is close. Answer three questions before you pay.

  1. 1

Have you run about 10 full practice cases?

If not, wait. A coach will spend your first paid hour on the case method you can learn for free. Management Consulted and Hacking the Case Interview both put the first session after roughly 10 cases.

  2. 2

Is your weak spot one that reps can fix?

If your last few cases keep failing on structure, math or synthesis, drill that one skill first. Book a coach if it has not moved after two weeks of targeted reps.

  3. 3

Is a real interview close, or does the problem only show up live?

Nerves with a senior interviewer, being pushed off your structure, fit or PEI stories, and your firm's exact format are what a former interviewer judges best. That is when one to three sessions pay off.

Skip coaching if you have an active consulting club with offer-holders who will case you, or if every case is still clearly better than the last. Hacking the Case Interview, run by a former Bain interviewer, says most candidates who land MBB offers never pay for a coach.

What do candidates get wrong before they pay a coach?

Structure was the weakest skill in 35% of the 1,584 full cases graded on Road to Offer between Aug 8, 2026 and Nov 5, 2026, from 832 accounts. Synthesis and math came next. Those three are the skills repetition fixes most cheaply, so fix them before you spend coach hours on them.

Communication was the weakest skill in only 1% of cases, but the grader judges it from what you said or wrote, not from how you sound across the table. Presence under a senior interviewer, firm calibration and fit stories are where a human coach earns the fee.

How many coaching sessions do you need?

Most candidates need 3 to 5 sessions. CaseCoach reports that customers who buy a package buy five on average, and Management Consulted suggests 8 to 10 for MBB candidates with little peer practice. Plan the first three like this.

  1. Session 1 · After about 10 cases

    Diagnostic

Ask for a case in your target firm's format, scored on that firm's criteria. Leave with the two habits costing you the most points.

  2. Session 2 · One to two weeks later

    Fix

Do 5 to 10 reps on just those two habits between sessions, then run a different case type with the coach to check they held.

  3. Session 3 · Three to seven days before

    Final-round simulation

A full interview at real pace: fit or PEI first, then the case, with a written score you can act on before the day.

How do you choose a case interview coach?

Choose someone who interviewed candidates for your target firm recently and who gives written feedback. Book one session before any package.

A former interviewer, not only a former consultant
Someone who scored candidates knows where the bar sits. Someone who only passed the interview can teach the method but not the grading.
Your firm and its format
McKinsey runs interviewer-led cases; Bain and BCG cases are mostly candidate-led. For Big 4 or boutique firms, a coach who interviewed there fits better than an MBB name.
Recent interviewing
Ask when they last interviewed candidates. Formats, online tests and fit questions change, and a coach who left years ago may be preparing you for an older interview.
Written feedback
Verbal notes fade by the next session. A written score per skill is what you practice against between sessions.

Red flags

  • An offer rate with no denominator. CaseCoach publishes 142 offers from 563 candidates; a bare "90% success" tells you nothing.
  • A 10-session package before you have had one session or a free intro call.
  • No clear answer, by the end of the first session, to what your two biggest gaps are.
  • Any promise of an offer.

What should you send a coach before the first session?

Send enough that the coach can skip the basics and start on your gaps.

  • The firm, office, round and date you are preparing for.
  • Your CV and the two fit stories you plan to use.
  • Notes or scores from your last three cases, and where you lost points.
  • One goal for the session, not "general practice".
  • A request for written scores, or permission to record.

What are the alternatives to paid coaching?

Peers and consulting clubs are free and give you volume, but feedback is only as good as your partner.

Firm materials are free and the most accurate guide to the format: McKinsey, BCG and Bain each publish practice cases.

AI-graded practice gives you reps and a score on every case without booking anyone. Road to Offer has 92 cases in its case library, scored on seven skills; a free account includes 1 full AI-graded case, and Pro is $49 a month. It has no human coaches and cannot recreate a senior interviewer pushing back. Our AI practice vs private coaching comparison covers what each does.

Case interview coaching questions

Is a coaching package cheaper than single sessions?

Usually, by about 10% to 30% an hour. Management Consulted charges $350 for one hour and $560 for two; Prepmatter charges $309 a session or $1,495 for five; CaseCoach takes up to 25% off packages. Book one session first, and buy a package only once you know the coach helps.

How many case interview coaching sessions do I need?

Most candidates need 3 to 5: one diagnostic, one or two to fix what it found, and one final-round simulation. CaseCoach reports that customers who buy a package buy five sessions on average. Management Consulted suggests 8 to 10 for MBB candidates with little peer practice.

Is case interview coaching worth it for McKinsey, BCG or Bain?

It is worth it after about 10 practice cases, when the same mistake keeps coming back or a final round is close. Before that, free practice teaches the method faster than a paid hour. Many candidates get MBB offers without a coach.

Does a case interview coach need to be ex-MBB?

For McKinsey, BCG or Bain, pick someone who interviewed candidates there, ideally recently. For other firms, a coach who interviewed at that type of firm matches your format better than an MBB name.

Can AI case practice replace a coach?

Not fully. AI-graded practice is cheaper per rep and good for structure, math and synthesis, the skills that most often sink a practice case. It cannot recreate a senior interviewer pushing back in real time or give firm insider calibration, which is where a coach earns the fee.

Does Road to Offer offer case interview coaching?

No. Road to Offer is AI-graded practice with no human coaches. Its 92 cases are scored on seven skills; a free account includes 1 full AI-graded case, and Pro is $49 a month.
