Consulting Firms in the UK 2026: Who Hires, What They Pay, How to Get In

Consulting firms in the UK 2026: the MBB, Big 4, and strong British players ranked by what they are known for, plus London salary ranges and the interview that decides every offer.

The consulting firms UK candidates chase in 2026 fall into three groups: MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), the Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) plus their strategy arms, and a strong bench of British-founded firms like PA Consulting, Baringa, and OC&C. The market is large and growing: MCA member firms billed £10.9bn in fee income in 2025, and because MCA membership covers roughly half the industry, the total UK consulting market is estimated near £21.8bn, up about 3% year on year, with firms forecasting 6% growth in 2026 and 8% in 2027 (MCA). Exports grew fastest of all, up 9% and now 31% of member fee income, which is why London teams increasingly staff onto European and Gulf work. London is the centre of gravity for strategy work, but Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol offices are expanding. This guide covers who hires, what London pays, whether you can be sponsored, and the one thing every firm screens on: the case interview.

Which consulting firms operate in the UK?

The UK hosts every global brand plus several firms founded in Britain that punch above their size locally. The table below is a shortlist by what each is best known for on the ground here.

FirmKnown for in the UK
McKinsey & CompanyCorporate and public-sector strategy; largest London strategy presence
Boston Consulting GroupGrowth, digital, and BCG X technology builds out of London
Bain & CompanyPrivate equity due diligence for London and European funds
Deloitte / Monitor DeloitteLargest UK headcount; government and tech transformation
PwC Strategy&Deals and corporate strategy; strong Big 4 strategy brand
EY-ParthenonM&A and PE diligence; large London deals team
KPMGRegulated industries, financial services, and audit-adjacent advisory
PA ConsultingBritish-founded; government, defence, and energy transition
BaringaIndependent UK firm; energy, utilities, and financial services
OC&C Strategy ConsultantsBritish-founded; retail, consumer, and private equity
L.E.K. ConsultingLondon-founded; life sciences and PE commercial due diligence
Oliver WymanFinancial services strategy out of a major London office
KearneyOperations, sourcing, and industrial strategy from London
Accenture (Strategy)Technology-led transformation and delivery at scale across UK clients

British-founded firms matter more here than any global ranking suggests. PA Consulting and Baringa win large UK government and energy mandates that global brands compete hard for. For the wider structure of the Big 4 versus MBB, see big 4 consulting firms and MBB vs boutique vs Tier 2.

Every firm on that table opens with the same screen. A European consumer margin problem is the closest single case to the retail and consumer work that fills London project rosters.

Which Tier 2 and boutique firms hire in the UK?

The UK directory lists well over 80 consulting brands and describes the wider market as running to "hundreds, if not thousands" of firms (Consultancy.uk). Most candidate shortlists never leave the first fourteen names above, which is a mistake: the tier below runs the same case interview for a fraction of the applicant volume, and several of these firms are stronger than MBB in the one thing you might actually want to do.

The trade is real and worth naming honestly. You give up the MBB brand on your CV and, usually, the top of the pay band. You get earlier client exposure, a narrower and deeper skill, and a shortlist where a strong case performance is not competing against a thousand Oxbridge applications for the same London intake. What you do not get is an easier interview. Restructuring and economics firms in particular push harder on quantitative work than a generalist first round does, so the math bar goes up, not down.

Which firm fits which UK practice area?

UK consulting concentrates around a handful of high-demand practice areas, and the strongest firm is rarely the same across them. Pick where you want to work first, then target the firms that own that space in London.

Practice areaFirms that lead it in the UKWhy it matters here
Financial services strategyOliver Wyman, McKinsey, BaringaThe City makes FS the single largest UK consulting vertical
Government and public sectorDeloitte, PA Consulting, McKinseyWhitehall and NHS mandates are a UK-specific, recession-resistant engine
Energy transition and utilitiesBaringa, PA Consulting, BCGNet-zero targets have made this the fastest-growing UK practice
Private equity due diligenceBain, L.E.K., EY-ParthenonLondon is Europe's PE hub, so commercial diligence flow is heavy
Retail and consumerOC&C, BCG, BainA deep British retail sector keeps consumer strategy demand high

Two structural notes the global rankings gloss over. First, the UK has a genuine mid-market and boutique tier (Baringa, OC&C, L.E.K.) that delivers top-tier work in its niche and hires selectively, so a boutique seat is not a consolation prize. Second, financial services and public sector dominate London volume, which is why a candidate who can size and structure an FS or government problem has an edge in interviews. Every one of these firms still screens the same way: a case interview and a fit round.

Picking a practice area is the easy part. Being able to structure a problem inside it is what the interview tests, so learn the framework logic first rather than memorising a list.

What does a "top" UK consulting firm ranking actually measure?

This matters because candidates pick shortlists off ranking tables without knowing what produced them. The main UK industry ranking assessed more than 1,400 firms for its 2026 edition and sorts winners into five bands (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze) across 60-plus areas of expertise and industry verticals, from financial services and public sector to healthcare, energy, sport, and media. The score combines two things: surveys (over 800 consultant and 650 client responses, producing roughly 4,000 firm reviews by sector) and a capabilities assessment covering projects, reputation, analyst benchmarks, industry recognition, and thought leadership (Consultancy.uk).

Three things follow for a candidate:

  • A ranking is per sector, not overall. A firm sitting in a lower overall band can be the top-rated name in the one practice you want, which is why Baringa in energy or OC&C in retail outranks a bigger brand for that specific job.
  • Prestige is an input, not the output. Because reputation and awards feed the score, brand strength partly explains the ranking rather than being explained by it. Do not read a table as a measure of the work you would do day to day.
  • None of it changes the screen. Diamond band or Bronze, the interview is a structured case plus a fit round, and the bar moves with the interviewer, not the ranking table.

What do consulting firms in the UK pay?

Compensation is set in London and quoted as base plus a performance bonus. The figures below are ranges from public salary sources; treat them as indicative, not offer letters. Public reports suggest MBB sits at the top of each band, with Big 4 strategy arms 10-20% below.

StageLondon base range (public reports)
Graduate / Analyst (MBB)~£49,500-£52,000 base, ~£60,000-£63,000 total
Consultant (MBB, post-first-promotion or MBA)~£90,000-£97,000 base
McKinsey London, all levels (Levels.fyi median)~£120,000 total, up to ~£201,000 at Associate Partner
Big 4 strategy / Tier 2Roughly 10-20% below the MBB band at each level

Can international candidates get sponsored in the UK?

This is the question that decides whether a UK shortlist is even worth building, and most firm listings skip it entirely. Two routes matter.

The Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from an employer approved by the Home Office and a salary of at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher (GOV.UK). London MBB and Big 4 strategy pay sits above that floor at graduate level (see the salary table above), so the salary test is not usually what stops a consulting candidate. The sponsor licence is what varies: the large firms hold one, while smaller boutiques may not sponsor at all, so check before you spend a cycle applying.

The Graduate visa needs no job offer and no sponsor. If you completed an eligible UK degree, it runs 2 years for applications on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for doctoral graduates (GOV.UK). Many candidates use it to start in a UK role and switch to Skilled Worker later.

The practical read: your visa position changes which firms are worth applying to, not what the interview asks. The case and fit rounds are identical for a sponsored candidate and a domestic one, so nothing about the preparation changes.

How should you choose a UK firm to target?

Pick for the work and the exit, not the brand alone. Five factors decide whether a firm is right for you, and only one of them appears on a ranking table.

What to weighThe question to answerWhere the UK market lands
Sector focusWhat do you want to be the go-to person for in five years?Financial services and public sector dominate London volume; energy transition is the fastest-growing practice
Project typeDo you want strategy decks, diligence sprints, or hands-on delivery?Bain and L.E.K. skew to short PE diligence; Deloitte and Capgemini Invent skew to multi-year delivery
OfficeAre you set on London, or open to a regional intake?London holds the strategy work; Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol run their own graduate intakes with less competition
Firm sizeDo you want a structured pyramid or early client ownership?MBB and Big 4 give scale and brand; Baringa, OC&C, and Elixirr give client exposure years earlier
DevelopmentFormal training programme, or learning by being thrown in?Big 4 and MBB run heavy formal academies; boutiques train on the job

Whichever you choose, the interview is the same gate, so build the case skill once and apply it across the whole shortlist. If private equity is the target, the fastest way to test whether you actually like the work is a commercial growth case on a PE-backed asset, which is what a London diligence team gets handed on day one.

How does UK consulting recruiting work?

Recruiting in the UK runs on two tracks that most candidates can use at once.

Execution checklist

  • Apply to campus and open tracks together. Firms run the heaviest presence at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Warwick, and UCL, but every MBB and Big 4 firm accepts open online applications from any university

  • Target the right office. London is the strategy hub, while Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol carry growing teams and their own graduate intakes

  • Move early in the autumn cycle. Graduate and internship schemes typically open August to November for the following year and are often reviewed on a rolling basis

  • Prepare the online assessment first. Expect McKinsey Solve, BCG Casey, or a Big 4 aptitude test before any live interview

  • Track MBA and experienced-hire timelines separately. These run year-round rather than following the autumn graduate cycle

The target-school list describes where recruiters spend time, not a hard gate. Every MBB and Big 4 firm accepts open applications, and British firms like PA Consulting and Baringa hire widely across UK universities.

Each step above has a matching rep, so the autumn window turns into practice rather than admin:

Is the interview different in the UK?

No, and this is the point most local listicles miss. A McKinsey case in London is graded on the same rubric as one in New York, Dubai, or Singapore: a clear structure, accurate quantitative work, and a defensible recommendation, wrapped in a fit conversation about your motivation and leadership. The McKinsey Solve assessment and BCG Casey screens are identical worldwide. That means preparation transfers: if you can crack a case with UK market numbers, you can crack one anywhere. See the McKinsey case interview guide for the full format.

The fastest way to feel that bar is market sizing on numbers you can sanity-check yourself. Work one aloud before you drill.

Estimate a new coffee chain's UK revenue: the British Coffee Association reports roughly 98 million cups of coffee consumed per day (Lumina Intelligence). A grab-and-go entrant targeting 0.5% of daily cups is 490,000 cups per day; at £3.20 that is about £1.57M per day, or roughly £570M a year. The pressure-test an interviewer wants next: 0.5% national share is aggressive for a new entrant, so how many stores would that many daily cups actually require? Anchor on a verified figure, take a share, price it, annualise, then challenge your own assumption.

If the arithmetic is the part that slows you down, learn the shortcuts before you drill volume.
