First Round: The Assessment Center

The first round at Deloitte is typically an "assessment center" or "super day," not a series of back-to-back 1:1 interviews like at MBB. A typical assessment center includes:

Assessors score two parallel tracks during the group exercise:

  • Did you identify key insights from the data?
  • Did your analysis move the group forward?
  • Was your reasoning structured and logical?

Team dynamics:

  • Did you listen to others and build on their ideas?
  • Did you help the group stay organized and on track?
  • Did you handle disagreement constructively?
  • Did you contribute without dominating?

The biggest group exercise mistake

Trying to dominate the conversation. Assessors are not looking for the loudest person. They're looking for someone who makes the group better. The candidate who listens, synthesizes what others have said, and proposes a clear path forward typically scores highest. Bulldozing other candidates is the fastest way to get rejected.

Deloitte Individual Case Format

The individual case interview at Deloitte is interviewer-led, similar to BCG and Bain. The interviewer presents a business problem and guides you through it with specific questions. Strategy & Operations (S&O) / Monitor Deloitte

Do 1-2 full cases per day with feedback, focusing on exhibit-heavy, interviewer-led format. If possible, practice group case exercises with 2-4 peers, assign roles, set a timer, and debrief on both analytical quality and team dynamics. Start drafting behavioral stories.

Week 5: Integration and Final Prep

Finalize behavioral stories. Research your target Deloitte practice area (read recent Deloitte publications and case studies). Run 2-3 full mock interviews under realistic conditions. Practice synthesis delivery for both individual cases and group presentations.

Common Mistakes That Kill Deloitte Candidacies

Dominating the group exercise. The #1 mistake. Assessors explicitly look for collaborative behavior. Talking over other candidates, dismissing their ideas, or monopolizing airtime is a guaranteed rejection, even if your analysis is excellent.

Ignoring exhibits. Deloitte cases are data-heavy. If the interviewer shows you a chart and you give a surface-level observation ("Revenue went up"), you've missed the point. Look for trends, outliers, segment differences, and the "so what" that connects the data to the business question.

Generic 'Why Deloitte?' answers. "I want to work at a top firm" applies to every consulting company. Reference a specific Deloitte practice, a recent project, or a unique aspect of Deloitte's culture. The strongest answers connect your background to a specific opportunity at Deloitte.

Preparing only for MBB-style cases. Deloitte interviews have a different rhythm: group exercises, more exhibits, more implementation questions. Candidates who prepare exclusively with McKinsey-style prep materials arrive expecting a candidate-led solo case and find a very different format.
