Newton Europe's graduate process is an operations and technical problem-solving assessment, not only a conventional case interview. Newton currently describes online numerical testing, a human-reviewed video interview, a full selection day, and two final interviews, one competency-based and one based on a technical case.
What is the current Newton Europe process?

The mixed format lets assessors judge how you share information and improve a group's work, not only whether you reach a number.

What does Newton actually test?
- Numeracy: percentages, rates, capacity, productivity, and data interpretation. Use the case interview maths guide if units or percentage changes still slow you down.
- Operational logic: identify where a process loses time, quality, or throughput. Use the operations case interview guide if you default to market-entry frameworks when the real problem is flow, capacity, or reliability.
- Communication: make complex steps simple enough for another person to follow.
- Collaboration: share information, invite quieter views, and move the group towards a decision.
- Reflection: explain what worked, what did not, and what you would change.
Newton names seven attributes on the same graduate role page: analytical and problem-solving capability; drive and resilience; curiosity; empathy and self-awareness; team spirit and humility; exceptional people skills; and agility and adaptability. Use them as an evidence checklist, not seven slogans to repeat.
Candidate reports describe different exercise details. Use them only as examples of variation. Newton's own invitation controls the current schedule, tools, and timing.
How should you manage the Newton selection day?
Newton's current graduate consultant page describes a virtual selection day with a group exercise, technical tasks, and a mini-interview and Q&A. Treat energy and attention as part of the task.
At the start of each exercise, write the objective, output, and deadline. In a group task, ask what information each person holds before proposing an answer. Newton says the exercise mimics a project, so make the team's work easier to follow. Summarise decisions, check units, and flag the assumption that could change the conclusion.
When new information arrives, do not defend the first answer. State what changed and update the recommendation. In a technical exercise, explain your logic while you work. If you make an arithmetic error, correct it plainly and continue. A hidden error is more damaging than a visible correction.
Use breaks to reset. You remain individually assessed, so help the group without disappearing inside it.
Worked Newton practice: improve a packing line
Prompt: A warehouse packs 1,200 orders in an eight-hour shift. Four teams each work eight hours. A proposed scanning tool cuts average handling time by 15%, but causes a 3% rework rate. Should the site pilot it?
Given: Assume output rises in inverse proportion to handling time. Reworked orders consume the same effort as a normal order.
Work:
- Gross capacity after the time saving: 1,200 ÷ 0.85 = about 1,412 orders.
- Because rework consumes the same effort, completed output is 1,412 ÷ 1.03 = about 1,371 orders.
- Net gain: 1,371 − 1,200 = about 171 orders, or 14%.
Recommendation: Pilot the scanner because the assumptions imply a material net throughput gain. Track rework causes, safety, and quality during the pilot. Stop if rework rises enough to erase the capacity gain.
This is not a market-entry case. The job is to understand the process, make the trade-off visible, and state how you would test the change.
Debrief the packing-line example
The calculation assumes output changes directly with handling time. A real operation can have fixed breaks, uneven demand, machine downtime, or a dispatch constraint. State that limitation before presenting 14% as a forecast.
The proposed pilot also needs a success rule. Track completed orders per labour hour, rework, customer errors, safety incidents, and downstream backlog. Compare the pilot team with a similar control team over the same demand period. If output rises but dispatch queues or customer errors rise sharply, the tool has moved the bottleneck rather than solved the system.
A useful Newton-style close is operational: who runs the pilot, what changes on the floor, which measures decide the outcome, and when the team reviews them. That makes the recommendation testable rather than theoretical.

How should you work in the group exercise?
Start by agreeing on the objective and time. Share your information early. Build on other candidates' points. Keep a visible decision log. Summarise where the group agrees and name the open question.
Do not compete for airtime. A useful intervention can be a calculation, a clarification, a synthesis, or an invitation to someone whose data has not been heard. The group needs a sound answer and a workable way to reach it. The group case interview guide gives a fuller method for sharing information without taking over the room.
Official format: Newton confirms a group exercise based on real Newton case studies. It does not state that every candidate receives different information. One useful rehearsal variation is to give each participant different information. This is a practice format, not a promised schedule.
To rehearse that variation, give each of four people one private card:
- operations has cycle-time and downtime data;
- finance has implementation cost and savings;
- people has training capacity and safety concerns;
- customer has demand and service-level information.
Spend the first two minutes sharing facts before proposing a solution. Build one common evidence table with the source, unit, and decision effect. Then rank actions against output, quality, safety, cost, and ease of implementation. The exercise tests whether you make hidden information usable. It does not reward keeping your card as personal leverage.

How should you prepare the application and fit answers?
Newton's current graduate page says a cover letter is not required. Complete the application form carefully and provide the education, work, and achievement details it requests. Check the live role before deciding whether a CV is needed.
For the video and competency interview, prepare specific evidence for why Newton, why hands-on operational improvement, and how you work with people. Include one story where your first approach failed and you changed it. Newton explicitly asks candidates to reflect on achievements and setbacks. Common Newton interview mistakes
- Preparing only market-entry and profitability frameworks.
- Reporting a number without explaining the units or logic.
- Dominating a group instead of improving its decision.
- Optimising throughput while ignoring quality or safety.
- Giving a rehearsed strength with no evidence.
- Assuming an old candidate schedule matches the current invitation.
What should you confirm before the day?
Confirm the tools, exercise schedule, and any role-specific instructions in your invitation. Ask about reasonable adjustments early.
How should you explain technical work?
Use units at every step. Say what the calculation means before moving on. If you calculate 170 extra orders, explain whether that is per shift, per day, or per site. Then test the operational constraint that could make the answer unusable. More packing capacity has little value if dispatch, quality control, or carrier collection becomes the new bottleneck. A clear explanation has five parts: objective, process, calculation, implication, and check. For example: “We want more completed orders without lower quality. The scanner reduces handling time, so gross capacity rises. After allowing for rework, output still rises by about 170 orders per shift. I would pilot it, but I would monitor false scans and dispatch capacity.” This is the communication skill Newton names directly: make the complex simple without hiding the logic.
For the final interviews, connect that method to your competency evidence. Newton's published graduate process lists one skills-and-experience interview and one technical case interview, each lasting 45 minutes. Prepare stories where you diagnosed a process, involved the people doing the work, measured the result, and changed course when evidence contradicted you. The firm-specific evidence is not that you enjoy abstract strategy. It is that you can improve a real system and explain the change clearly to other people.
