PA Consulting Case Interview: Format, Implementation Focus, and Prep Guide (2026)

PA Consulting uses a practical, implementation-focused case interview style. Learn the 3-stage process, what makes PA cases unique versus MBB, and how to prepare.

PA Consulting doesn't recruit like McKinsey, and it doesn't interview like McKinsey. The firm has been solving real problems for governments, defense agencies, and large institutions since 1943 — and the interview process reflects that practical, implementation-oriented culture. If you walk in treating it like an MBB interview, you'll miss what they're actually evaluating.

The good news: PA's interview process is more collaborative, less structured, and rewards genuine problem-solving instinct over framework memorization.

How PA Consulting Differs From MBB

Before walking into a PA interview, understand what they're optimizing for:

DimensionPA ConsultingMBB
Case focusStrategy + implementationPure strategy
Interview styleConversational, collaborativeStructured, formal
Case endingExpected to think through executionStops at recommendation
Industry focusGovernment, defense, healthcare, energyIndustry-agnostic
Geographic modelUK-centric, strong EU public sectorGlobal
PrestigeHigh in UK/Europe public sectorGlobally highest
Interview difficultyMedium-highHighest

PA cases end differently than MBB cases. McKinsey interviewers want your recommendation. PA interviewers want your recommendation and how you'd execute it. The execution question isn't a bonus — it's a core component of what they're evaluating.

The PA Consulting Interview Process

PA's process runs 3 stages, with variations by country and role:

Framework

PA Consulting Interview Process

  1. 01

    Stage 1: Initial Screening

A recruiter call (20–30 min) or online video interview with pre-set questions. Covers: why PA, your background, and role fit. Some countries use a Hirevue-style video assessment. No case content at this stage.

  2. 02

Stage 2: Competency + Case Interview (60–90 min)

A live interview (usually Teams or in-person) with a Senior Manager or Principal. Split approximately 40/60 between behavioral competency questions and a case. The case is 25–35 minutes, conversational in style. Expect an execution question at the end.

  3. 03

Stage 3: Partner Interview or Assessment Center

For experienced hires: a Partner conversation with deeper behavioral and strategic discussion. For graduate entry: sometimes an assessment center including group exercise, case presentation, and written exercise. Some UK graduate cohorts include a technical capability interview.

Timeline: PA's hiring process averages 36–38 days per Glassdoor data, which is moderate — faster than some large-firm processes, slower than startups.

What PA Cases Look Like

PA cases skew toward the sectors they actually serve. Unlike McKinsey (which might give you a retail case one day and a pharma case the next), PA leans toward its core sectors:

High-frequency case types at PA:

  • Government digital transformation: "How would you approach a national digital ID implementation?"
  • Defense and security: "An MoD agency wants to reduce procurement costs by 20%. How?"
  • Healthcare transformation: "An NHS trust is running at 115% bed capacity. What would you recommend?"
  • Financial services: "A mid-tier bank is losing corporate clients to fintech competitors. What should they do?"

The implementation dimension in practice:

A standard MBB case ending: "So to summarize — I recommend the client enters the European market through a joint venture, given the lower capital requirement and the partner's distribution capabilities."

A PA-complete case ending: "I recommend the JV route. To implement this over 18 months, I'd structure it in 3 phases: Phase 1 is partner selection and deal structuring (months 1–6), Phase 2 is market entry and brand positioning (months 6–12), Phase 3 is performance review and JV optimization (months 12–18). The biggest risk is cultural integration between the parent and JV partner — I'd address that with a dedicated governance structure in Phase 1."

The PA candidate added a roadmap and a risk. The MBB candidate would have passed at McKinsey and underperformed at PA.

Behavioral Interview at PA

PA's competency framework is more developed than most firms publish. The main themes in behavioral questions:

CompetencySample QuestionWhat Strong Looks Like
Influence without authority"Tell me about a time you got a senior stakeholder to change their mind."Specific stakeholder, clear tension, deliberate approach, measured outcome
Delivery under ambiguity"Describe a project where requirements shifted halfway through. How did you adapt?"Proactive reframing, transparent communication, delivered despite the change
Client or citizen impact"What's the work you're most proud of? What was the real-world outcome?"Specific outcome — not "we improved the process" but "we reduced wait times by 40%"
Why PA specifically"Why PA rather than McKinsey or Deloitte?"Must reference PA's public sector depth, UK/EU positioning, or implementation orientation. Generic "culture" answers don't land.

The "why PA" question is harder than it looks. The authentic answer is one of: (1) you specifically want to work on government or defense transformation, (2) you want the UK/EU market, or (3) you want the combination of strategy and implementation rather than pure strategy. Any of these reads as genuine. "PA is a great consulting firm and I want to work with smart people" does not.
