A UK consulting CV should give a recruiter fast evidence of academic strength, analytical work, leadership, and measurable impact. Use UK terms and spelling, state your degree class clearly, and choose one or two pages based on the role, your experience, and the firm's instruction.

What format should a UK consulting CV use?

Use a plain reverse-chronological layout. Put the strongest decision evidence where a recruiter can find it quickly. The broader consulting resume guide shows the same evidence hierarchy with more examples; this page adds the UK-specific degree, spelling, and document rules.

SectionIncludeAvoid
HeaderName, phone, professional email, LinkedIn if useful, city or regionPhoto, full street address, age, marital status
EducationUniversity, degree, dates, achieved or predicted class; selected academic evidenceHiding the class or using an unexplained grade conversion
ExperienceRole, organisation, dates, 2-4 quantified bulletsTask lists with no result
Leadership and activitiesScale, responsibility, outcomeLong membership lists
Skills and interestsLanguages with level, useful technical skills, specific interestsUnsupported soft-skill labels

UK spelling means “analysed”, “organised”, and “programme” where appropriate. Keep official organisation and course names in their original spelling.

What evidence distinguishes a consulting CV?

A consulting CV should show decisions under constraints. Recruiters need evidence that you can analyse information, work with people, communicate a recommendation, and produce a result. The evidence can come from paid work, university projects, societies, volunteering, sport, or a part-time job.

Use a balanced set of bullets. One can show analysis, one leadership, one influence, and one delivery under pressure. Do not force every bullet to contain money. A faster process, fewer errors, more users, a difficult stakeholder decision, or a stronger academic result can be relevant if you explain your contribution.

Compare these examples:

  • Retail job: “Analysed hourly queue data and changed weekend staffing, cutting average customer wait from nine to six minutes across two shifts.”
  • University project: “Built a demand model from 1,200 survey responses and recommended two launch segments, which the project sponsor used in its pilot plan.”
  • Society leadership: “Led eight volunteers to redesign first-year outreach, increasing event attendance from 120 to 210 while holding the budget flat.”

Each bullet starts with a useful action, gives scale, and ends with a result. Keep proof for every number because interviewers can ask how you measured it. Use the consulting action-word guide when a bullet starts with a vague verb, but choose the verb only after you identify the real action.

Should a consulting CV be one page or two pages in the UK?

There is no universal UK rule. Plural Strategy's current strategy consulting CV guidance says one to two pages is enough. Cambridge's management and strategy consulting guide recommends one page for UK consulting roles, while allowing two for advanced-degree applicants or people with substantial experience. LSE Careers says length varies by sector, location, and employer. Use this role-stage rule:

Applicant stageStrong defaultMove to two pages whenDo not do
Undergraduate internshipOne pageThe firm asks for two or you have several directly relevant rolesKeep school activities that displace university evidence
Graduate or master's applicantOne focused pageA second page adds distinct evidence the job description valuesShrink the type to preserve weak bullets
PhD or advanced degreeOne or two pagesResearch, leadership, industry work, or technical depth affects the hiring decisionTurn it into an academic publication CV unless asked
Experienced hireTwo pages can be appropriateSeveral relevant roles or projects show progression and client impactList every task from every role
Any applicant with a stated firm limitThe firm's stated limitNever, unless recruiting confirms an exceptionTreat general UK advice as stronger than the vacancy

Do not shrink type or margins until the page is hard to read. Cut low-value bullets first.

How should you write UK degree classes?

Use the wording a UK recruiter expects:

  • BSc Economics, University of Bristol, 2023-2026 | Predicted First Class
  • BA History, University of Warwick, 2021-2024 | 2:1
  • MEng Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London, 2020-2024 | First Class

A First and an upper second-class degree are normally written as First and 2:1. A lower second is 2:2. Do not convert an international grade to a UK class unless the employer provides a method. Show the original scale and, if necessary, a short official ranking or distinction.

How do you write a quantified consulting bullet?

Start with the decision or action. Add scale. End with the measured result.

Weak: “Helped the society organise events and managed stakeholders.”

Better: “Redesigned sponsor outreach for a 12-person society team, securing £8,000 from six partners and funding three events for 450 students.”

The better bullet shows ownership, stakeholders, scale, and outcome. Use only numbers you can explain in an interview. If a result cannot be measured in money, use time, volume, quality, users, error reduction, or decision scope.

Here are four more original rewrites. The numbers show the shape of good evidence. Replace them with your real facts.

BeforeAfter
“Responsible for analysing customer data.”“Analysed 18,000 customer records, found two churn drivers, and helped the team target a retention test at the highest-risk segment.”
“Worked with a team on a sustainability project.”“Coordinated a five-person team across engineering and finance, comparing four retrofit options and recommending the plan with the shortest payback.”
“Helped improve a reporting process.”“Mapped a weekly reporting process, removed three duplicate checks, and cut preparation time from six hours to four.”
“Presented findings to senior stakeholders.”“Presented a pricing recommendation to six directors, answered margin-risk questions, and secured approval for a six-week pilot.”

If you do not own the final outcome, write the contribution honestly. “Built the model used in the decision” is stronger than claiming you made a decision that belonged to a manager.

What do UK consulting firms ask applicants to submit?

Requirements vary by firm and role. Current official examples show why you must check the live vacancy:

Firm and routeCurrent published document ruleSource
CIL AnalystCV plus initial application and written motivationCIL hiring process
Elixirr early careersCV; cover letter optional; application questionsElixirr early careers
Newton early careersNo cover letter required; complete the application form and provide the requested backgroundNewton graduate role

These examples do not create a market-wide rule. Application forms change. Check the current role before submission.

How should you tailor one CV across UK firms?

Keep one evidence bank, then select the bullets that match each vacancy. Do not rewrite facts or inflate a title. Change emphasis and order.

For CIL, prioritise commercial analysis, market research, and decisions made from incomplete information. Its current Analyst process combines a CV and motivation with commercial and market-sizing interviews; the CIL interview guide shows how that evidence is tested later. For Elixirr, show group contribution, presentation, and adaptability because its early-careers process includes group case work and an individual presentation. The Elixirr assessment-centre guide explains that transition from application evidence to observed behaviour. Newton's graduate process currently says no cover letter is required. Complete the application form carefully, check whether the live role requests a CV, and use the Newton interview guide to prepare evidence for its video, selection day, and final interviews.

Save the vacancy description with the submitted PDF. If you receive an interview weeks later, you need to know which wording and examples the recruiter saw.

CV versus cover letter: what belongs where?

The CV proves what you did. The cover letter explains why this firm and role make sense now.

Do not duplicate your CV paragraph by paragraph. If a letter is requested, use one page and answer three points: why this work, why this firm, and what evidence shows you can do it. If it is optional, submit it only when it adds specific motivation or context. The consulting cover-letter guide gives a separate structure and examples.

What should international applicants include?

Use the same evidence-led CV. State language level accurately. Keep the original degree and grade system. Do not add sensitive personal data that the form does not request.

Right-to-work and sponsorship rules change and differ by employer. Do not claim sponsorship on the CV unless it is true and useful. Answer the application form accurately, then verify the employer's current policy and the official UK work-visa guidance.

A UK consulting CV checklist

  1. Match the role title and office.
  2. Follow the requested document and page rules.
  3. State the achieved or predicted degree class.
  4. Use consistent UK spelling and dates.
  5. Put outcomes, scale, and your action in each major bullet.
  6. Remove photos, graphics, skill bars, and unsupported ratings.
  7. Check every number and link.
  8. Export to PDF and confirm that text is selectable.
  9. Use a clear file name such as FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf.
  10. Ask someone to read it at normal size in under one minute.

Common UK consulting CV mistakes

  • Copying a US resume without adapting degree classes and UK terms.
  • Forcing every applicant into two pages because UK CVs can be longer.
  • Forcing an experienced record into unreadable one-page formatting.
  • Listing responsibilities instead of decisions and results.
  • Treating a cover letter as a duplicate CV.
  • Adding a photo or unnecessary personal details.
  • Assuming every graduate scheme asks for the same documents.
  • Making a right-to-work claim without checking current rules.

What comes after the CV?

Once the document is strong, prepare for the assessment that follows it. Use the UK consulting recruiting guide for application timing and tests, then start case interview practice before invitations arrive.

Before submission, check dates, degree class, numbers, links, file name, and document requirements. Then scan as a recruiter: can you find the strongest academic result, analytical decision, leadership example, and impact in under one minute? If not, change the order and cut weaker evidence.
