Does McKinsey Solve Matter? How to Split Your Prep Time

McKinsey considers Solve with your application and other assessments, but does not publish its weight. See how to allocate a week across Solve, cases and PEI.

Does McKinsey Solve matter as much as your resume and interviews?

Yes, McKinsey Solve matters: McKinsey officially says its result is considered with the rest of your application and any other assessment results, but it does not publish a relative weight or a rule for trading one result against a resume or interview. Treat Solve as consequential without inventing a percentage weight. Your invitation supplies your assessment length; ask your recruiter about process details specific to you.

McKinsey's Solve careers page calls it a gamified assessment in consultant recruiting, and its game lab article describes it as an additional recruiting data point. Neither gives a score formula. Our full McKinsey Solve guide separates official from reported detail, and the McKinsey online assessments hub lists the independent Road to Offer practice games.

Where does Solve fit in the McKinsey application process?

McKinsey officially places Solve within consultant recruiting and says its result is reviewed with the application and any other assessments; it does not publish a universal invitation order or a stage-by-stage weighting. The figure shows what feeds the decision, not a promised sequence for every candidate.

Recruiter decisionOfficial: Solve FAQ
The recruiter decides on multiple factors. Solve alone does not decide candidacy, and no formula is published.
As described in McKinsey's August 2025 Solve FAQ. No source gives the weight of any input.

An invitation is an instruction to take an assessment, not proof that a resume threshold has been crossed: McKinsey publishes no rule for who receives Solve, and none saying every applicant gets the same games. Candidate reports describe Red Rock and Sea Wolf, with Sustainable Futures Lab in some longer invitations; only Sea Wolf is named in McKinsey's own article. The Red Rock study guide covers the reported quantitative task, Red Rock versus Sea Wolf compares the two, and the Ocean Treatment guide works one fictional microbe site.

If your resume is still open for editing, give it a separate pass with the McKinsey resume guide; the MBB recruiting roadmap covers the wider journey across firms.

Can a strong resume make up for a weak Solve result?

McKinsey does not publish a rule saying a strong resume can offset a weak Solve result, although its official FAQ says the recruiter considers both within a multi-factor decision. Take a fictional applicant with a strong record of project work who feels they missed a Red Rock chart question. Promising that the resume rescues them would be as false as declaring an automatic rejection.

After a question you think you missed

You know
What you submitted in your application.

That the question counted heavily.
That the recruiter will read it one way.

Fictional applicant. Only the first column is evidence about their own file.

What you can still do is review the chart skill with case interview math practice and keep preparing for the next confirmed stage with the McKinsey case interview guide.

Can a strong Solve result compensate for a weaker resume?

McKinsey does not promise that a strong Solve result compensates for a weaker resume; its official statement only says the result is considered with the rest of the file. A second fictional candidate has a thin application and a confident practice run. The run shows how they handled an independent task, nothing more.

Reading a confident practice run

Reads it as a forecast

Strong run, so an interview follows

McKinsey publishes no conversion from any practice result to its score or to a recruiter outcome.
Reads it as a diagnostic

Strong run, so one skill is checked

The run names a habit to keep and an error to review. The application still has to carry its own evidence.
Fictional candidate. Road to Offer practice is independent of McKinsey.

A referral, school, role or past result cannot be assigned an override weight from the published guidance either. McKinsey's sources state no different Solve weight for interns, MBAs or experienced hires: the internship guide, the MBA Solve article and the experienced-hire Solve article cover each path, while your recruiter remains the authority for your file.

Is McKinsey Solve a pass-or-fail gate before interviews?

McKinsey does not publish a Solve pass mark, pass rate, score scale or automatic rejection rule in the reviewed official sources, so you cannot label your own performance a verified pass or fail. The multi-factor answer does not mean poor performance is harmless; it means the public evidence cannot support a one-number rule for everyone.

How should you split one week between Solve, cases and PEI?

McKinsey publishes no required prep-hour split; use the next confirmed deadline and your weakest observed practice skill to divide your week. Its FAQ says no preparation is needed and each task begins with an untimed tutorial, so any practice is your own choice. The three schedules are fictional study budgets, not official guidance or promises about interview chances. One setup serves all three:

Setup

Leila: application submitted, no Solve invitation yet

With no confirmed assessment date, Leila keeps cases as the main block, runs one Red Rock diagnostic to expose a chart or arithmetic error, and practises a PEI story aloud. If an invitation arrives, she rewrites the week around its actual deadline.

Nikhil: invitation received, assessment due soon

Nikhil's fictional invitation sets a near deadline, so his hours move toward Solve: his actual instructions first, then Red Rock evidence and units, Sea Wolf constraint checking, and a fresh run with review. One case rep and one PEI story stay in the week. His own email, not this calendar, determines the deadline and assessment length.

Nikhil, fictional 9-hour week
Original planning example with a near invitation deadline. The assessment's actual length and deadline come from the invitation, not this chart.

The habit worth his Sea Wolf hour is transferable: list each constraint, test the proposed group against each one, and revisit the one you missed. McKinsey names Sea Wolf without publishing its full rules or timing.

Amara: Solve submitted, live interviews may be next

Amara cannot edit a submitted sitting by practising it again, and McKinsey publishes no fixed result date. She moves her hours to case reps and PEI stories with the PEI guide, and keeps a small Solve block for one reasoning weakness she saw in independent practice. If her recruiter sends a different next step, she changes the plan.

Amara, fictional 10-hour week
Original planning example after submission. No bar represents McKinsey's hiring weight or a known result.

Side by side, the three weeks show the rule: the Solve share rises only when a real invitation sets a date.

Original planning examples. Shares of study time, not McKinsey weights or measured outcomes.

Whichever week is closest to yours, spend its Solve block on the game you have practised least. The SFL practice page is for a reported game that McKinsey's reviewed sources do not name; skip it if your invitation does not include it.

Build a Solve plan for the days you have

Enter your Solve test date and get a plan for each day until then. No date yet? The plan still builds, and you can set the date later.

What should change when your Solve invitation arrives?

Your McKinsey invitation should set the assessment length and your immediate calendar; McKinsey does not publish a universal deadline, extension rule or per-game time in the reviewed official sources. Read the email before borrowing a candidate-reported game map.

The system requirements article helps you interpret the check without inventing a device specification, and the deadline extension guide separates the dates involved and what to ask. For a disability, health condition or specific learning difficulty, ask your recruiter about accommodations. The barred aids come from McKinsey's assessment integrity rules: an independent practice run belongs before the official sitting, never alongside it.

What can you conclude after submitting Solve?

After submitting Solve, you can conclude that you completed the assessment, but McKinsey's reviewed sources do not publish a fixed result date, guaranteed score report or rule linking silence to a score. Keep your invitation details, watch for the recruiter's response and continue the practice relevant to the next confirmed step.

Sources and evidence boundaries

The official sources below were checked on October 11, 2026. They support the stated process and assessment facts, not the fictional prep schedules or an individualized prediction.

Reported, not official: candidate descriptions of Red Rock and Sustainable Futures Lab, game combinations and task details. Not published in the reviewed official sources: Solve's relative hiring weight, pass mark, pass rate, score scale, invitation rule, game-by-game minutes, universal deadline, extension or retake policy, result timeline and stage-specific carry-forward weight. The calendars and hour budgets above are original teaching examples, not observed McKinsey outcomes.
