McKinsey Solve Deadline Extension: How Long Do You Have?

Separate the application deadline, the Solve invitation window, and the timed assessment. See who to contact, what to ask, and how to plan a safe sitting.

How long do I have to complete McKinsey Solve, and can I ask for more time?

McKinsey publishes no standard number of days from a Solve invitation to completion and no general extension policy in the official sources checked October 11, 2026; your own invitation supplies the applicable instructions, and your recruiter handles non-technical questions. The official Solve FAQ says the assessment length is stated in the invitation. That is not a published rule for how long the link stays available.

You can rehearse a data-reading task in Road to Offer's independent Red Rock practice right here. It is a practice game, not McKinsey's assessment, and its clock cannot tell you how much time your invitation allows.

Three clocks, and where each one is written

Application deadlineRole clock
The role's recruiting process
It covers submitting for a role. It is not your Solve completion instruction.
Completion windowPersonal clock
Assessment lengthTimed clock
Your invitation emailGoverns your sitting
Read the date, hour and timezone it gives. Ask your recruiter if any part is unclear.
Only the assessment length is tied to the invitation by McKinsey's FAQ. No public source gives a number of days for the completion window.

The McKinsey application deadlines guide owns role and school application dates, and the cross-firm deadlines calendar helps with other applications. Neither tells you when your Solve link closes. For the reported game formats behind an invitation's length, use the Solve guide and Red Rock versus Sea Wolf, while giving your email and the on-screen instructions priority.

Is my McKinsey application deadline also my Solve deadline?

No: the application deadline concerns submitting for a role, while the Solve invitation gives you an individual assessment instruction; McKinsey's reviewed public Solve sources do not equate the two. If you have two emails with different dates, check the role, office, sender and most recent instructions, then ask your recruiter which applies. Do not average conflicting dates or borrow a friend's invitation.

A later interview decision is another separate clock; the delayed consulting recruiting timelines guide addresses that wider wait. The official Solve page says the result is considered alongside the rest of the application and other assessments, which does McKinsey Solve matter unpacks. It sets no universal invitation date or results timetable.

If you have not received an invitation, do not infer its deadline or even that you will receive one. McKinsey's reviewed public sources do not specify who is invited by role, office, school or experience; does everyone get McKinsey Solve covers what is known, with separate pages for experienced hires and MBA candidates. The online assessments overview orients you to Road to Offer's independent practice games, not to an unpublished invitation rule.

How can I choose a start time that leaves room to finish?

Use the assessment length stated in your own invitation, then set aside additional time for the official technical check and untimed tutorials; McKinsey publishes no universal latest-safe-start formula. The FAQ recommends a slot without disturbance and with enough time to finish without interruption. The margin is your own allowance, not an official extension or a promise about what happens at the cutoff.

Here is an invented scheduling exercise, not a candidate report or a McKinsey duration. Imagine an invitation that says to finish by 18:00 local time and lists a 70-minute assessment. You choose 20 minutes for setup and tutorials and 25 minutes of personal margin, then work backwards before booking a quiet room.

Setup
Fictional planning block, in minutes
Fictional latest start for an 18:00 finish
All quantities are fictional planning inputs. Use the length and cutoff in your own invitation; McKinsey publishes no setup allowance or grace period.

If your email does not clearly say whether the deadline is a start-by or finish-by cutoff, ask your recruiter, and until they clarify it, schedule to finish before the stated time. If the timezone is missing or conflicts with another message, ask instead of converting a guessed timezone. The Solve system requirements guide explains the official technical check, which runs after you click the link; McKinsey publishes no hardware list.

Can I get an extension for a conflict before starting Solve?

McKinsey does not publish approval criteria or a guaranteed Solve extension for an ordinary scheduling conflict; its official FAQ sends non-technical questions to your recruiter. A request is not an approved new date.

Asking for a different sitting window

1
Find the cutoff
Copy the date, hour and timezone from your invitation, with the role and office.
2
Ask the recruiter early
Name the conflict in one line and offer a specific alternate window you can keep.
3
Wait for a written answer
A new date is confirmed in writingPlan against the new date
No reply yet, or the answer is unclearKeep planning against the original cutoff
4
Hold a fallback slot
If you have another quiet slot before the existing cutoff, keep it free while you wait.

Original recruiter email for a known conflict before starting:

Subject: Solve timing for [role and office]

Hello [name], my Solve invitation gives [date, time, timezone] as the cutoff. A pre-existing care commitment leaves me without an uninterrupted sitting before that point. I can complete the assessment during [specific alternate window]. Is that window possible for my application? Please confirm which cutoff I should follow. Thank you, [name].

The scenario is illustrative; it is not evidence that this reason qualifies for a change. Do not include more personal detail than the recruiter needs. For a qualifying accommodation, McKinsey's FAQ says to speak to your recruiter; the official accommodations page describes the wider process, which this ordinary template does not replace.

What if an emergency makes my planned sitting impossible?

For an emergency before Solve starts, McKinsey's public guidance gives no special deadline-extension rule, so contact your recruiter promptly and ask what applies to your invitation. Keep the message factual. If you cannot propose a realistic alternate slot yet, ask how to update them once you can. The reviewed Solve sources do not say that documentation automatically wins an extension.

Original recruiter email for a documented emergency:

Subject: Urgent Solve timing question for [role and office]

Hello [name], an unexpected emergency documented through [appropriate channel] prevents me from completing Solve by the [date, time, timezone] in my invitation. I remain interested in the role. Please tell me whether another sitting can be arranged and what documentation, if any, you need through your approved process. I can update you on my availability by [date]. Thank you, [name].

This template deliberately asks how to provide documentation; do not attach sensitive records to an unverified address. If the emergency is also an accommodation need related to a disability, health condition or specific learning difficulty, say that you need to discuss an accommodation. McKinsey says accommodations are available, but the FAQ does not prescribe an approval date or an automatic extension.

Contact McKinsey Solve support at [email protected] or through live chat when the technical issue occurs; its official FAQ says support can diagnose the link and may give extra time or reset it depending on the issue. If the calendar cutoff may be affected, tell your recruiter as a separate process question.

Contact routes as given in McKinsey's August 2025 Solve FAQ. A fault that also threatens the cutoff goes to both.

What a support ticket does, and what it does not

McKinsey states
Support can run diagnostics on your link.
Support may give extra time or reset the link, depending on the issue.
With no contact to support, no exception for a reset is made.
Solve runs on a PC or Mac, not a phone or iPad.
Not published
That a ticket moves your calendar cutoff.
A general deadline extension after a fault.
A rule for leaving and reopening a partly opened link.

If the tech check reports a device problem, tell support what the check said and when. Nothing in the FAQ authorizes you to bypass the check. Do not record or screenshot the live assessment as evidence: McKinsey's Solve rules prohibit captures except for an accommodation approved in writing, and its broader assessment integrity expectations also govern outside aids and assistance.

Can I start just before the cutoff or submit after it?

McKinsey does not publish a general late-start, finish-after-cutoff or late-submission rule for Solve, so a link that still opens near your invitation's deadline is not proof that a later finish will count. Ask your recruiter before the cutoff if the wording is ambiguous. The technical check and untimed tutorials are additional steps to allow for; the FAQ does not say they move the calendar deadline.

Try another fictional decision exercise. Your invitation says to finish by 17:30 and lists a 55-minute assessment. You only become free at 16:50.

Free at 16:50, finish by 17:30: fictional check

Checks the start
The start is before the cutoff and the link opens, so the sitting looks safe.
Checks the finish
Before any setup time, the planned finish already falls after the stated cutoff.
Invented times. The result says to ask before relying on this sitting; it does not predict how McKinsey treats a late attempt.
Fictional gap past the stated cutoff

If the reason you cannot begin is a broken link, use support while the fault is present and notify the recruiter about the cutoff risk. If you simply missed the date, tell the recruiter promptly what occurred and ask for the next step. Neither automatic acceptance nor automatic rejection follows from the public sources. The Solve retake guide addresses what is and is not published about another attempt.

Quiz

Your Solve link opens shortly before a stated finish-by cutoff. What does that establish?

Sitting time settled? Check constraints against a timer

The finish check above is a constraint check. Try the same habit on a free, independent Sea Wolf run and see your practice score at the end.

Open Sea Wolf practice

McKinsey's July 2025 game lab article officially names Sea Wolf; its public sources publish no per-game minutes or deadline rule. The Ocean Treatment game guide works one fictional site in full.

What should I do after submitting Solve if I hear nothing?

McKinsey's reviewed official Solve sources do not publish a fixed result date or say that silence reveals your score; for your own application status, ask your recruiter. Because the result is considered with the rest of the application and any other assessments, neither a fast reply nor a long wait can be read as a standalone Solve verdict. Candidate accounts of response times are reported context, not a schedule you can enforce.

If the assessment submitted normally, keep the invitation and any confirmation you received. If a final screen or link failed, report it promptly as a possible technical issue, describing it in words without capturing the assessment. Continue preparing for a possible McKinsey case interview and Personal Experience Interview, while keeping other applications moving; the McKinsey internship guide and MBB entry guide own those broader paths.

If your sitting is still ahead of you, pick the game you know least and play one independent practice run:

Build a Solve plan for the days you have

Enter your Solve test date and get a plan for each day until then. No date yet? The plan still builds, and you can set the date later.

Before you close the invitation email

  • Record the personal cutoff. Include the date, time, timezone, role and latest recruiter instruction.

  • Reserve an uninterrupted sitting. Use your invitation's length and allow your own setup and margin.

  • Send the question to the right contact. Recruiter for process or accommodation; Solve support for a technical fault as it occurs.

  • Keep confirmation distinct from assumption. A request, open link or practice result does not confirm a changed deadline or hiring outcome.

Sources and evidence boundaries

The official sources below were checked October 11, 2026. They support the stated contact routes and assessment process, not the fictional calendars, email templates, or an individual extension decision.

Reported: candidates discuss different invitation lengths and post-Solve waiting times. Those reports do not establish your completion deadline, game mix, score, or result date. Not published in the reviewed official sources: a universal invitation window, extension criteria, weekend grace period, late-start or late-submission outcome, retake rule, result timeline, per-game minutes and scoring threshold. The worked calendars and messages on this page are original teaching examples.
