Consulting firms in New York for 2026: MBB, Big 4, and finance specialists compared. McKinsey alone has 900+ consultants at 3 World Trade Center.

Consulting firms in New York in 2026 give candidates an unusually broad choice: flagship-scale McKinsey, BCG, and Bain offices; all four Big 4 firms; and specialists in finance, deals, risk, and restructuring. This is a candidate guide, not a buyer directory. It maps firms to the work you could actually join, the Columbia and NYU Stern recruiting pipeline, current compensation evidence, and the interviews between an application and an offer. New York's advantage is concentration: banks, insurers, private-equity funds, media companies, and corporate headquarters all sit near the consulting teams serving them. McKinsey says its New York office has more than 900 consultants, while BCG describes New York as one of its largest offices. The practical choice is therefore not simply MBB versus Big 4. It is whether you want broad strategy, financial-services depth, diligence, transformation, or turnaround work, and which firm's current role offers that mix.

Start with the work, not a universal ranking. Vault's 2026 list blends prestige with culture, satisfaction, compensation, work-life balance, challenge, outlook, and promotion policies. That methodology is useful for comparing employers, but it does not tell you whether a particular New York practice fits your goals.

What the local office facts tell a candidate

McKinsey and BCG offer scale, but in different Manhattan hubs. McKinsey lists more than 900 consultants at 3 World Trade Center, 175 Greenwich Street. Its office page names financial services, healthcare, technology, media, and the public sector, so the office is broader than Wall Street work. BCG opened New York in 1984 as its 10th office and now occupies floors 40 through 47 at 10 Hudson Yards. BCG names healthcare, insurance, industrial goods, financial services, consumer goods, and retail among the industries served locally. For candidates, those are useful staffing clues: both offices can support a generalist entry route without making finance the only plausible story.

Bain combines a Tri-state client base with separate recruiting routes. Bain describes the office as serving leading and emerging companies across the Tri-state area and as home to people from six continents. The office page also separates recruiting contacts for undergraduate and MBA candidates, advanced-degree applicants, and working professionals. That makes Bain a practical target for both campus and experienced recruiting, not merely an MBA pipeline.

The Big 4 choices split by operating model. Deloitte candidates can target Monitor Deloitte strategy, technology, operations, or human-capital roles. Strategy& sits inside PwC's larger deals and implementation platform, while EY-Parthenon connects growth strategy and commercial diligence to EY transactions. KPMG's New York teams add risk, regulated-industry, and transformation work. The relevant fact is not that all four have Manhattan offices. It is that the job family controls whether the interview emphasizes a classic case, a functional exercise, technical depth, or a mixture of all three.

Oliver Wyman, A&M, and FTI give the list a New York-specific spine. Oliver Wyman's Midtown base is close to the banks and insurers that anchor its financial-services and risk work. A&M was founded in New York in 1983 and still identifies the city as its global headquarters, with restructuring and performance improvement at the core of the firm. FTI's New York location lists five practices, including Corporate Finance and Restructuring, Economic Consulting, Forensic and Litigation Consulting, Strategic Communications, and Technology. A candidate who wants turnaround, disputes, investigations, or crisis work gets a materially different career from a generalist MBB role, even when both teams serve the same corporate client.

Why New York is different from another large consulting market

New York is not just a large generalist office. Four client clusters change the mix of cases and exits.

  1. Financial services. Banks, insurers, asset managers, and fintechs create sustained strategy, risk, operations, and regulatory work. Oliver Wyman is an obvious specialist target, while MBB and every Big 4 firm also field dedicated financial-services teams. Compare the broader field in our financial-services consulting firms guide.
  2. Private equity and deals. Funds and portfolio companies support commercial diligence, value creation, and transaction work. Bain and EY-Parthenon are prominent options, but A&M and FTI become especially relevant once a portfolio company needs performance improvement or restructuring.
  3. Media and technology. New York's media, advertising, telecom, and platform businesses create growth and transformation projects that differ from the city's finance core. The TMT case interview guide covers the economics candidates need to recognize.
  4. Turnaround and disputes. A&M's New York roots are not trivia. The firm was founded here in 1983 around restructuring and performance improvement, giving candidates a locally anchored alternative to a general strategy path.

If private-equity work is your target, rehearse the investment logic instead of memorizing industry facts.

The Columbia and NYU Stern pipeline

New York's MBA recruiting pipeline is measurable. Columbia Business School's 2025 employment report lists 51 new hires at BCG, 36 at McKinsey, and 17 at Bain, with PwC adding 18. BCG and McKinsey each reached 62 total hires once returning interns are counted. Those numbers describe Columbia's reporting cohort, not every New York consultant.

NYU Stern is the second local MBA feeder. Consulting is a major local MBA destination, but it is not an MBA-only market. Firms separately recruit undergraduates, advanced-degree candidates, and experienced hires.

Use the Columbia case book and NYU Stern case book as prompt banks, not answer scripts. Published cases teach structure only if you solve them aloud before reading the solution.

What does New York consulting pay?

There is no single New York consultant salary: firm, level, practice, and bonus matter more than the city label, and firms do not publish office-level pay. What the BLS May 2025 release does publish is the local wage level for the occupation groups consultants sit in:

Mean hourly wage, May 2025New York metroUnited States
All occupations$41.50$33.54
Management occupations$94.64$69.84
Business and financial operations$57.35$45.78

New York pays about 24% above the national average across all jobs and about 36% above it for management roles. That premium is real, but so are New York costs, so compare offers on base, target bonus, sign-on, retirement contribution, and housing rather than on base alone. For firm-by-firm and city-by-city numbers, use the consulting salary by city guide.

Build a New York shortlist by practice

The fastest shortlist is a set of parallel applications tied to one career hypothesis:

  • Broad strategy and maximum industry range: McKinsey, BCG, and Bain.
  • Strategy plus a large implementation platform: Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, and KPMG Strategy.
  • Banking, insurance, and risk depth: Oliver Wyman plus the financial-services practices at MBB and the Big 4.
  • Private-equity diligence and portfolio value creation: Bain, EY-Parthenon, A&M, and FTI.
  • Restructuring and performance improvement: A&M and FTI, with AlixPartners as another firm to research.
  • Media, telecom, and technology: MBB, Strategy&, Deloitte, and specialist teams that name those sectors in current roles.

Do not infer that a prestigious firm is hiring every practice now. Save the exact job title, office, deadline, eligibility rule, and assessment sequence for each application.

Turn the categories into a balanced application portfolio. Pick two or three broad strategy firms, two practice-led firms, and one or two specialists whose work matches evidence already on your resume. A bank analyst might combine McKinsey, BCG, or Bain with Oliver Wyman and Strategy&, then add A&M or FTI for transactions and restructuring. A healthcare operator could pair MBB with Deloitte, EY-Parthenon, and a healthcare specialist. This approach gives each cover letter a real thesis while protecting you from relying on one recruiting calendar.

For each target, save four local facts before networking: the Manhattan office, the named practice, one current role, and one recent local case study or initiative. Ask consultants how staffing works across New York and nearby offices, how much work is industry-aligned at your level, and which entry role fits your experience. Those questions produce decision-grade information. Asking whether the office is “collaborative” usually produces the same answer everywhere.

How to prepare for New York consulting interviews

The client mix changes the prompt, not the core candidate skills. Expect to structure an ambiguous problem, work accurately with numbers, interpret evidence, and give a direct recommendation. Your current invitation remains the authority for the exact stages.

Structure a New York client problem from the Road to Offer drill engine. Answer a real prompt and get AI-scored feedback. Free accounts include 5 drills per day for the first 3 days after signup.

  1. Tailor your consulting resume to quantified impact, then use the free resume grader before submitting.
  2. Build fit stories around leadership, conflict, and measurable results. New York firms do not need another generic answer about prestige.
  3. Practice sector-shaped cases. Finance prompts often turn on customer economics, risk, or regulation; media prompts often turn on subscribers, advertising, or content costs.
  4. Record firm-specific screens. McKinsey, BCG, Big 4, and specialist roles can use different tests, written exercises, or case formats.
  5. Run full cases aloud. Reading solutions does not train synthesis under pressure.
