An Oliver Wyman resume has one job: make quantitative ownership verifiable inside the first third of the page. The screen is a human read rather than an automated keyword filter, and recruiting write-ups of the process describe three signals it returns to repeatedly. First, specific evidence of quantitative work, which means a number you produced and can explain rather than the phrase data driven. Second, exposure to financial services or another commercially regulated domain, which matters even when you are not applying to the Financial Services practice. Third, bullets that carry a problem, a structured approach and a measured result in one line. Reported figures put fewer than 30 percent of applicants through to an interview call, and the initial CV screen is commonly reported at 5 to 10 days. That is the entire budget your document gets, and it is the reason section order matters as much as wording.
The firm's own entry-level page is more open than the recruiting folklore around it. Oliver Wyman states it welcomes all academic majors or industry experiences and appreciates evidence of an interesting and impactful life outside your studies, and it names initiative, intuition, creativity and a strong problem-solving mindset as the qualities it values. Read those two sources together and the target becomes clear: an unusual background is not a liability, but an unquantified one is.
What does Oliver Wyman actually screen a CV for?
Three things, and they are not weighted equally for every candidate type. Recruiting write-ups of the process consistently name quantitative depth first, financial services or regulated-industry literacy second, and structured problem-solving evidence third. Separately, process write-ups describe the screen as weighing academic performance from selective institutions, the ability to break a problem down and prioritise its most important components, and evidence of genuine motivation for this firm rather than for consulting in general.
What the screen is not is an applicant tracking system that ranks you on token matches. At this tier the document is read by a person, usually a consultant on the recruiting team for your school or market, and case-interview vocabulary is a tell rather than a credential. Words like MECE, issue tree, hypothesis driven and profitability framework belong in your interview preparation, not on the page. A CV that recites them signals that you have read prep material, not that you have done analytical work. Keep the file machine-parseable as basic hygiene, meaning selectable text, standard headings and nothing important buried inside an image, then write every line for the human. The consulting resume keywords and action words list is useful as a verb bank for describing what you did, never as a set of tokens to insert.
Does Oliver Wyman require a quant or finance background?
No, and getting this wrong costs strong candidates their application. The firm says it welcomes all academic majors or industry experiences. The confusion comes from the shape of the work: Financial Services is Oliver Wyman's largest and best-known practice area, sitting alongside ten other named industries including Automotive, Energy and Natural Resources, Health and Life Sciences, Private Equity and Principal Investors, Retail and Consumer Goods, and Transportation and Services. Its capability list runs to fifteen entries, from Actuarial Consulting and Risk Management to Pricing, Sales and Marketing and Turnaround and Restructuring. That mix is why quantitative fluency reads as table stakes even for a generalist role.
The practical translation is that you need one defensible piece of quantitative evidence, not a finance degree. Any of these clear the bar when written properly:
- A model you built. A scenario model, a cohort forecast, a break-even, a capacity plan. Name what it compared and what decision it informed.
- A measured operational change. Throughput, error rate, cycle time, cost per unit, conversion. State the before and after only when your records support both.
- Research with a real dataset. A thesis, a lab analysis, a survey of meaningful size. Name the method and the finding.
- Unit economics you owned. Pricing, margin, retention or acquisition cost for a venture, club, campus business or team budget.
- An engineering or technical project. Oliver Wyman Vector and Oliver Wyman Engineers are named businesses, so a technical build with a commercial outcome is on-strategy rather than off-topic.
If your background sits outside financial services entirely, do not fake proximity to it. Show that you can work inside constraints someone else set, because that is the transferable half of regulated-industry literacy. The financial services case interview guide covers the domain vocabulary you will need at interview, and the private equity case interview guide covers the diligence-shaped work that the Private Equity and Principal Investors practice runs.
How should you order the sections?
Order by what is strongest, then keep it consistent. The default that fails most often is a campus template applied to an experienced profile, where three years of client results sit below a degree line.
The generic mechanics of margins, fonts, dating conventions and file naming belong to the consulting resume guide, and a working starting layout is in the free consulting resume template. This page owns the narrower question: given the same facts, which ones move up for this firm.
What belongs in the header and education section?
Keep the header to four lines: name, one phone number, one professional email address, and the city plus work authorisation status where it is relevant to the office you are targeting. A LinkedIn URL is optional and only earns its line if the profile is current. Anything else, including a personal statement or an objective line, is spending your most valuable vertical space on a sentence nobody reads.
Education carries real weight at the campus screen, because process write-ups describe academic performance at selective institutions as an explicit screening criterion. Handle it like this:
- Degree, institution, expected or actual graduation date. In that order, on one line.
- Grade evidence where the application permits it. A strong GPA, class rank, or the local equivalent such as a UK classification or a French grande ecole ranking. If it is not strong, omit rather than explain.
- Standardised test scores only while they are recent and strong. They are a quantitative proxy at the campus stage and dead weight three years into a career.
- Quantitative coursework, selectively. Econometrics, statistics, optimisation, financial modelling. Two or three named modules, not a transcript.
- Awards and scholarships with the competitive field named. A scholarship awarded to 5 of 400 applicants is evidence. An unnamed award is decoration.
Experienced applicants invert all of this. Cut the education block to two lines and let the roles carry the page.
How do you write a bullet that survives the screen?
Use four parts in a fixed order: the problem or question, your own action, the method, and the result. Start with a verb that names a decision you owned. Add a number only where your records support it, and be ready to explain the calculation behind it, because the Oliver Wyman case interview is candidate-led and interviewers will probe a CV number the way they probe a case assumption.
Three rules keep those lines defensible. Never quote a result you cannot reconstruct in an interview. Never claim a team outcome without naming your own action inside it. And never use a precise-looking number as decoration: if the real figure is confidential or unmeasured, use an observable proxy such as adoption by a sponsor, the size of the group affected, or the fact that a process was reused.
What if none of your results have numbers?
This is the most common blocker, and it is usually a recall problem rather than an evidence problem. Work through the artefacts rather than the memories. Pull the deck, the model, the ticket queue, the budget, the sign-up sheet. Ask what changed after your work existed that was not true before it, then ask what would have been counted if anyone had counted it.
Where a number genuinely does not exist, these proxies read as honest and still show scale:
- Scope. Number of products, markets, sites, accounts or people covered.
- Adoption. Who used the output, and whether it is still in use.
- Decision. The choice your work informed, and who made it.
- Cadence. Weekly, monthly or per cycle, which shows the work was operational rather than one-off.
- Comparison. The number of options you evaluated before recommending one.
An honest proxy beats an invented metric every time, and the difference is visible at interview within two follow-up questions.
What survives the screen but fails the next stage?
Worth knowing before you write, because it changes what you keep on the page. After the CV screen, the reported sequence is a recruiter screen, an online numerical assessment, then interviews. Write-ups describe the assessment as roughly 18 to 20 questions in 30 minutes with a calculator permitted and incorrect answers penalised, while other accounts of the process describe a longer 40-question, 60-minute numerical test depending on office and year. Either way it is chart and table interpretation, percentages, ratios and multi-step business arithmetic under time pressure. Candidates with strong CVs fail here regularly, because a clean quantitative story on paper and fast accurate mental math are different capabilities.
That is also the honest reason to keep quantitative claims on the CV modest and specific. A page that promises analytical firepower and an assessment score that does not support it is a worse position than a page that promises less.

Which mistakes are specific to Oliver Wyman?
Five, and only two of them appear on a generic consulting resume checklist.
There is a sixth that is worth naming separately because it is invisible: submitting the same document to every firm. Targeting is not dishonesty, it is choosing which true facts sit highest. The why Oliver Wyman answer you would give at interview is a good test of whether your top third supports the story you plan to tell.
How do the CV and cover letter divide the work?
The two documents are read as one application, and Oliver Wyman is reported to read letters more carefully than firms that treat them as optional. The division is clean: the CV proves, the letter argues.
Letters commonly land at roughly 350 to 450 words on this application, which is one page with margin left over. The general structure lives in the consulting cover letter guide, and a paired starting point for both documents is in the free resume and cover letter starter kit.
How Road to Offer helps at this stage
The resume grader reads a consulting CV the way a screener does and returns a written report on evidence, clarity and priority fixes, so you find the weak bullet before a recruiter does. Beyond the document, the platform carries over 600 AI-graded drills across structure, math, market sizing, graph reading, synthesis and brainstorming, a case library of full cases with AI grading, behavioral practice, and assessment simulators for the named MBB screens. Signup includes a case credit, so the first full graded case runs at no cost. The relevant surfaces for this article are the grader block above now, the Oliver Wyman practice cases once the application is in, and the drill bank in between.
What should you check before submitting?
Before the Oliver Wyman application goes in
Confirm the current posting's format and document requirements for your exact office. Page limits, transcript requirements and whether a letter is accepted vary by market and change year to year
Read only the top third of the page and find one quantitative artefact. That is the section the reported 5 to 10 day screen actually spends its attention on
Circle every number and name the record that proves it. Candidate-led interviews probe CV numbers the same way they probe case assumptions
Delete every case-interview term from the document. MECE, issue tree and hypothesis driven read as prep vocabulary to a human screener
Underline your own action inside every team claim. Team blur is the single most common reason a strong result reads as weak evidence
Name the practice your evidence best supports. Eleven industries and fifteen capabilities are named by the firm, so a targeted fit is available to most backgrounds
Run the document through the Road to Offer resume grader. An independent graded report catches the lines you have stopped seeing
Check the CV and the cover letter tell one consistent fact pattern. The two documents are read together and a contradiction between them is fatal
Book the math practice before the assessment invite arrives. The numerical test follows the screen quickly and is where strong paper profiles most often stop
Finish by reading the page as a sceptical interviewer rather than as its author. If a line sounds more senior than the story behind it, narrow the claim. If the strongest evidence is real but sitting on line 34, move it. If a bullet cannot produce a clear two-sentence explanation on demand, rewrite it or cut it. Then send it, and start the case preparation, because the reported path from CV submission to offer can run as short as about 29 days.
Grade the final draft before it goes in
Upload the CV for a consulting-specific report on evidence, clarity and the fixes worth making first. Independent scoring, not an Oliver Wyman evaluation.
