What SOVA sections should I prepare for?

The honest answer is: prepare for the sections in your invitation. Sova’s candidate preparation hub describes the activity families below. Its catalogue does not establish a universal Bain section list; use the consulting aptitude guide for transferable reasoning methods. You can also see how Bain sits alongside other firms on the assessments overview.

Bain's digital assessment guidance says the invitation identifies Sova or Test Gorilla and directs Sova candidates to provider preparation materials. Follow those instructions for the exact setup and permitted equipment.

How do you solve SOVA numerical questions faster?

Use five checks:

1. Read the question before the exhibit.
2. Name the required operation in words.
3. Confirm the period, population, and unit.
4. Estimate the answer range before calculating.
5. Re-read what the answer option represents.

Worked numerical question: which branch grew faster?

Given. An original practice company reports the following annual sales. Values are in thousands of dollars. Which branch had the higher percentage growth from Year 1 to Year 2?

Work it out before reading on. Compare percentage growth, not the dollar increase.

Worked answer. East grew by (300 - 240) / 240 = 25%. West grew by (208 - 160) / 160 = 30%. West therefore grew faster by 5 percentage points, even though East added more sales in dollars: $60,000 versus $48,000.

The tempting wrong answer is East because 60 is larger than 48. That answers a different question. Dividing by Year 2 sales is also wrong because growth uses the starting value as its base. State the denominator before reaching for a calculator.

Quick Math

1. What is 14% of $450M?

   Build the percentage from 10% and 1% blocks instead of multiplying directly.

2. Margin moves from 17% to 26%. What is the change in percentage points?

   Percentage-point change = Ending percentage - Starting percentage, kept in points, not converted to a relative percent.

3. Revenue goes from $140M to $175M. What is the percent growth?

   Percent growth = (Ending value - Starting value) / Starting value.

How do you solve abstract logical patterns?

Test one simple rule at a time: count, position, rotation, shading, then interaction between shapes. Avoid inventing a complicated story before checking whether one property changes consistently.

• Count: does the number of objects rise, fall, or alternate?
• Position: does an object move around fixed locations?
• Rotation: does orientation change by a constant amount?
• Shading: does fill alternate or follow another object's position?
• Combination: do two simple rules operate independently?

Eliminate options that violate a confirmed rule before resolving the remaining ambiguity.

Worked visual-pattern question: two rules at once

Given. Each frame contains one arrow and one circle. Read the sequence from left to right. The words describe the same visual properties as the symbols.

Question. Should Frame 5 contain an up arrow with an outline circle, an up arrow with a solid circle, or a right arrow with an outline circle?

Worked answer. Choose up arrow and outline circle. The arrow rotates 90 degrees clockwise each time. The circle independently alternates outline, solid, outline, solid. A solid circle satisfies the rotation rule but fails the shading rule. A right arrow satisfies the shading rule but skips one rotation.

These are original teaching examples, not questions taken from Bain or Sova. Use the SOVA practice diagnostic to apply the method to a different abstract pattern.

How should I prepare for Bain SOVA in two weeks?

Do not spend the entire plan memorizing one provider's screenshots. Build a stable approach that survives unfamiliar values and layouts.

Is this enough to simulate the whole Bain assessment?

No. Seven questions provide a short numerical and logical practice baseline. They are not enough to claim a complete SOVA battery. Use the worked examples to learn the method, then use the diagnostic to check it on unfamiliar data. Add separate preparation for any other sections named in your invitation.

How should I review a SOVA practice result?

Classify each miss by mechanism rather than by topic. Numerical mistakes usually come from selecting the wrong data, choosing the wrong operation, losing the unit, or calculating inaccurately. Logical mistakes usually come from overlooking a changing property, combining two rules incorrectly, or committing to a complex pattern too early.

For the case interviews after assessment practice, apply your numerical reasoning in a separate Bain-style library case.

Track recurring categories across several sets. One wrong percentage does not prove weak numerical reasoning, but repeated denominator errors identify a specific skill to repair.

Quick Math

1. Revenue is $90M and cost is 70% of revenue. What is profit, in dollars?

   Build the percentage off the 10% anchor, then Profit = Revenue - Cost.

2. A market grows 9% a year. Using the Rule of 72, how many years does it take to double?

   Years to double = 72 / growth rate. It runs backwards too: divide 72 by the years a market took to double to recover its rate.

3. Segment A is 75% of revenue at a 16% margin. Segment B is 25% of revenue at a 40% margin. What is the blended margin, in percent?

   Blended margin = (Weight A x Margin A) + (Weight B x Margin B). Never average the two percentages: revenue mix moves this number.

What should I do about situational and personality sections?

Do not treat personality preparation as learning a “Bain answer key.” Read each statement carefully and respond honestly and consistently. For situational judgment, favor responses that are practical, collaborative, evidence-based, and proportionate to the problem. Avoid extreme behavior unless the scenario genuinely requires escalation.

Because this sampler does not include those sections, it makes no claim about readiness for them. If your invitation includes them, add provider-appropriate practice. If it does not, spend the time on the reasoning sections you will actually face.
