A Kearney resume has one job: to survive a fast human read by a consultant who is looking for owned, quantified operating impact. The firm runs roughly 5,300 consultants across 60 or more offices in 40 or more countries on 2022 revenue of about 1.6 billion dollars, and operations, procurement, and supply chain work is estimated at 40 to 50 percent of that revenue. Published process coverage puts the share of applicants invited to interview below 30 percent, and reviews are run by local office teams against the live role rather than by a central rubric. That combination sets the writing rules. Lead with the achievement a supply chain partner would recognise, put a defensible number beside it, and keep the first half of page one free of anything a reader has to decode. The screen is a person, not a parser.
What does the Kearney resume screen actually look at?
Local teams read the page against the specific vacancy, so there is no single published scorecard. What the reported guidance agrees on is the shape of the read: academic performance, evidence that you break problems down and work with data, proof that you have led or influenced something, and a reason to believe you want this firm rather than any firm. Those four signals are the ones to make visible in the top third of the page. Everything else is supporting material.
Read your own draft the way that table reads: stop after the first role and ask whether all five rows have been answered. If a reviewer has to reach the activities section to find ownership, the page is ordering the wrong things first.
Can you beat a Kearney ATS with the right keywords?
No, and this is the most expensive misconception in consulting applications. Tier one strategy firms run a human screen. Applications arrive through an online system, but a consultant or recruiter reads the page, which means the keyword tactics that work for high volume corporate hiring actively hurt you here. Two specific habits do damage.
The first is loading the page with case interview vocabulary. Words such as MECE, issue tree, hypothesis driven, and 80/20 are preparation language. A reviewer who spends their week running client workstreams reads them as someone who has studied interviews rather than done work. The second is a skills bank of nouns with nothing attached: "stakeholder management, data analysis, process improvement" proves nothing, occupies prime space, and invites the follow up question you cannot answer.
The honest version of keyword advice is narrower and it does work. Use the verbs and nouns of the live job posting where they truthfully describe what you did, because they are the vocabulary the reviewer has in their head that week. The broader verb bank in consulting resume keywords and action words is useful for the same reason: it gives you precise verbs for actions you actually owned. A keyword is a label attached to proof. Without the proof it is noise, and on a human screen noise costs you.
How should you order sections for a Kearney application?
Section order is a legibility decision, not a rule. Pick the order that puts your strongest verifiable evidence in the first half of page one for the reader who has your specific posting open.
The consulting resume guide owns generic template selection, margins, and formatting mechanics, and the free consulting resume template gives you a base document to start from. This page owns the Kearney specific question: given operations weight and a local office read, which of your achievements deserves the first line?
On length, one page remains the practical default for students and early career applicants in the United States. Several European offices accept two pages, and experienced hires with genuine operating scope usually need the second page. Some offices, including published Belgium guidance, ask for an English CV plus a cover letter and may request transcripts or work authorisation details. Read the posting, not a blog rule, and note that the same firm can want different documents in two countries.
Why does operations experience change how you write your bullets?
Kearney's commercial centre of gravity sits in operations, procurement, supply chain, and analytics, estimated at roughly 40 to 50 percent of revenue. That has a direct writing consequence: the achievements that read as native here are the ones with a physical or cost system behind them. A cost per unit that came down. A lead time that shortened. A supplier base that consolidated. A plant, warehouse, or service line whose throughput changed because of something you did.
You do not need a manufacturing background to write this way. What the framing asks for is the operating chain behind your result. A marketing analyst who cut campaign production turnaround from eleven days to six has an operations bullet. A finance associate who rebuilt a month end close has an operations bullet. The move is to name the process, the baseline, the intervention, and the new state, rather than naming the function you sat in.
Four questions convert a generic line into a Kearney legible one:
- What was the baseline? A number before you touched it, with its unit and period.
- What did you personally change? The decision, analysis, negotiation, or redesign you owned, not what the team did around you.
- What moved, and by how much? The new number, or an observable result such as adoption, a supplier signed, or a process still in use.
- Did it survive? Implementation follow through is the differentiator this firm's work is built on. A recommendation that was never adopted is a weaker line than a smaller change that stuck.
If you are also preparing for the interview stages, the Kearney case interview guide covers the operations heavy case formats those same achievements will be tested against, and operations case interview covers the archetype in general.
What do before and after bullet rewrites look like?
These rewrites use Road to Offer's own generic example set. They show the writing move. Replace every detail with evidence from your own record that you can defend out loud.
Notice that none of the stronger versions uses consulting jargon. They use numbers, verbs, and consequences. If your record does not support a percentage, do not invent one: an observable result such as adoption, reuse, or a decision reached is worth more than an unverifiable statistic, because you will be asked about it.

What belongs in the education section, including GPA?
Academic performance is one of the reported screening signals, so this section is doing real work rather than filling space. Keep it tight and specific.
- Degree, institution, and dates first, with expected graduation clearly marked if you have not finished.
- GPA or class rank where it is competitive and where the campus or office process asks for it. A strong number belongs on the line with the degree, not in a footnote.
- One or two selective achievements: a scholarship with a stated selectivity, a thesis whose question you can summarise in a sentence, a competition placing with the field size.
- Relevant coursework only when it is genuinely differentiating, for example operations research, supply chain management, or statistics for a role that names them.
- Test scores when the posting asks for them or when the number is a clear strength.
What to leave out: a list of every module, a language proficiency claim you cannot defend in a five minute conversation, and high school detail once you have any university record. If your academic record is the weakest part of your profile, the fix is not to hide it. Move a strong quantified achievement above it and let the reader meet your best evidence first.
How do experienced hires and MBAs adapt the page?
Experienced applicants face a different problem from students. Their evidence is stronger and their page is more crowded, so the editing job is subtraction.
Lead with the two or three roles where you owned a decision, a budget, a line, or a supplier relationship. Compress everything older into a single line per role. Replace tool inventories with the decision the tool supported: "built the demand forecast that set quarterly buy volumes" beats a list of four systems. If you are moving out of industry, spell out the scope in terms a consultant can size instantly, for example headcount managed, spend controlled, sites covered, or units shipped.
MBA and masters candidates should decide honestly whether the degree or the pre programme record is the stronger signal. If you spent four years running plant operations before business school, that experience is the reason a reviewer takes the application seriously, and burying it under coursework is a self inflicted wound. The Kearney consulting overview covers the firm's entry paths and where each candidate type typically lands, and what a management consultant does helps a career changer describe their work in terms the reader shares.
If you are weighing offers or targeting an office, the consulting salary guide carries the comparative compensation picture. Published 2026 coverage puts post undergraduate consultants at roughly 110,000 to 120,000 dollars base with about 135,000 dollars total compensation, and post MBA associates at a median near 209,000 dollars total.
What separates the resume from the cover letter?
The two documents are read together and they own different jobs. The resume proves what happened. The letter explains why those facts point at this firm, this office, and this role. Reported guidance on this firm is unusually direct about motivation: a letter that shows you have researched the firm, spoken to its consultants, and can argue why it is your first choice is treated as a real signal, not a formality.
That has a consequence for the resume. Do not spend resume space on motivation. No objective line, no profile paragraph explaining your passion for operations. Give that space to evidence and let the letter carry the argument. The consulting cover letter guide covers the structure, and the resume and cover letter starter kit pairs the two documents so the facts agree.
One consistency check matters more than the rest: every achievement the letter leans on must be visible on the resume. A letter that introduces a result the page cannot support reads as an inflated claim, and it is the easiest thing in the world for an interviewer to test.
What happens after the resume passes?
The resume buys you the next stage, and the next stage tests a different skill entirely. Reported process coverage describes an online recruitment test of about 60 minutes and 40 questions without a calculator, then a first round of roughly two 45 to 60 minute sessions mixing case and behavioural content, then a final round, with an application to offer window of about three to five weeks. Some offices add a written case or a spreadsheet exercise.
That gap is worth naming while you are still writing bullets, because the two jobs are related. The achievements you just made concrete are the raw material for behavioural answers, and the structuring skill the case tests is the one candidates most consistently misjudge in themselves. The Kearney behavioural interview questions page turns resume lines into spoken stories. For the structuring half, one graded rep tells you more than an hour of reading.
Get one structure attempt scored from the Road to Offer drill engine: a real prompt, your answer, and AI-scored feedback. Free account includes free daily drills.
Keep the two efforts separate in your calendar. Rewriting a resume while trying to prepare cases usually means doing both badly. Finish the document, submit it, then move your attention to the interview stack.
Which mistakes cost applicants the interview here?
These are the recurring failures on tier one strategy applications, ordered by how often they decide the outcome.
- Strategy language over operating evidence. A page full of "strategic initiatives" and "cross functional alignment" with no unit, baseline, or number attached. At a firm whose revenue leans on operations and procurement, this is the most common mismatch.
- Numbers with no denominator. "Increased efficiency by 30 percent" without saying thirty percent of what, measured over what period, against what starting point.
- Team achievements written as personal ones. Interviewers probe this fast. Name what you personally did inside the team result.
- One resume for every firm and office. Local teams review against their own posting. The same page can pass in one office and fail in another because the role wanted something you buried on page two.
- Case vocabulary as decoration. Covered above and worth repeating because it is so common: it signals preparation, not experience.
- Confidential client detail. Former consultants and industry hires both trip on this. Describe the sector, the scope, and the result without naming what you cannot name.
- A weak first bullet in the most recent role. Readers sample. If bullet one of your current job is a duty statement, many readers never reach bullet three.
- Formatting that hides the evidence. Dense nine point text, a two column layout that breaks in the applicant system, or a graphic skills chart that occupies a third of the page and proves nothing.
If your resume is also going to be checked against your public profile, LinkedIn versus resume strategy covers keeping the two consistent without duplicating them.
What should you check before you submit?
Kearney submission checklist
Open the live posting and confirm documents, office, and deadline. Requirements are set locally, and some offices ask for transcripts or an English CV plus letter
Read only the top third of page one and ask what it proves. That is the part of the page most reliably read, so the strongest evidence has to live there
Put a baseline, a unit, and a period beside every number. A percentage with no denominator invites the question you least want
Rewrite any bullet whose verb is supported, assisted, or involved in. Those verbs hide the ownership the screen is looking for
Convert one generic result into an operating chain. Process, baseline, intervention, new state is the shape that reads as native here
Delete case interview vocabulary and unattached skill nouns. A human reads this page, and prep language reads as prep, not experience
Check every metric, title, and date against your own records. You will be asked to explain the weakest number in the room
Grade the final draft once before it leaves your hands. One structured read catches the buried evidence, using the free consulting resume grader
Confirm the cover letter introduces no result the resume cannot support. The documents are read together and the mismatch is easy to spot
Book the interview prep separately from the writing. Start with the Kearney case interview guide once the application is submitted
Then read the whole page once as a sceptical interviewer. If a line sounds more senior than the story behind it, narrow the claim. If the evidence is real but sits on page two, move it up. If a bullet cannot survive the question "how do you know", rewrite it or cut it.
How Road to Offer helps with the Kearney application
Road to Offer is a full preparation platform rather than a document service. The consulting resume grader gives you one complete AI review per account, scoring evidence, clarity, and consulting relevance and returning priority fixes rather than a generic tidy up. Beyond the document, the platform carries 600 plus drills across structure, math, market sizing, graph reading, synthesis, and brainstorming, free courses in learning mode, live AI graded cases, behavioural simulations, and assessment practice for the named tests several firms run. The natural order for a Kearney applicant is: grade and fix the resume, submit, then move to structure and math reps and a full case while the process runs. Start the free drills at the tools library and browse the case library when you are ready for a full case.
The Kearney cover letter guide covers the letter this page pairs with, and the Kearney salary breakdown shows the offer at the end of the process.
