HSBC HireVue: Values-Mapped Answers and the Immersive Simulation (2026)
HSBC screens through an immersive HireVue simulation plus values-mapped competency questions. The reported format, real questions, and how to prep.
On this page
HSBC does not run a plain video screen. Candidates describe an immersive simulation facilitated by HireVue: video answers plus numerical reasoning plus situational ranking, all inside one fictitious role scenario. Then the values test begins. Every video question maps to HSBC's three values: Open, Dependable, and Connected. The most-reported decider is values mapping, because generic competency stories score nothing here. Everything below is built around that reality.

Format at a glance
Your invite overrides the table. Graduate, Global Markets, and regional tracks already differ on counts and re-record rules. Train the single-take variant regardless: reviewers compare takes, and the first honest take usually wins. If your track allows re-records, set a hard rule before you start: one re-record maximum, spent only on a genuine glitch like a frozen camera, never on wanting a smoother delivery. Candidates who re-record for polish descend into overthinking by the third take. Decide the rule before the camera opens, not during.

The HSBC questions to expect
Reported prompts cluster into three lanes. Build one skeleton per lane before you record anything, and tag each with its value:
- Values stories (Open). A time you adapted to change or learned from unfamiliar people. Close with the value named: that is what the scoring looks for.
- Values stories (Dependable). A time you owned a result or handled an ethical call. One situation sentence, three action moves starting with "I", a quantified result.
- Values stories (Connected). Teamwork across difference, client or community impact. Name the other party and what changed for them.
- Situational ranking. Rank responses to hypothetical work situations inside the simulation. Decide from the values, not from confidence: the dependable answer outranks the bold one.
- Global Markets twist. A piece of market news you followed, explained with a view. Follow one story for two weeks before you record.
Say each answer out loud against a timer on HireVue Practice before you record.
The immersive simulation deserves its own prep block
Candidates describe fictitious role information, numerical items, and ranking tasks before the camera work. Prep this like an assessment centre in miniature: one numerical set plus one situational set per day for a week, always against the clock. On recording day, do the analytical items first at a steady pace and protect your composure for video: stand up, reset posture, and run your values opener once out loud. Candidates who treat the simulation as a warm-up arrive at the values questions already depleted.

A prep plan that respects the order
- Values bank first. Nine stories maximum, three per value, from the common questions bank. Tag each story with its value in writing before rehearsing it aloud.
- Simulation second. Numerical plus situational sets daily for a week. Decide ranking items from the values, not from boldness.
- Markets diet third. One story for Global Markets tracks, followed for two weeks with a stated view.
- Full mock last. Simulation items plus a 5-question video set in one sitting, single takes, then rerun only the failed prompts once.
What gets HSBC candidates cut
- Unmapped stories. Strong content with no value named scores nothing.
- Bold ranking answers. The dependable response outranks the confident one in situational items.
- Burning re-records. Three takes invite overthinking, and reviewers compare.
- Skipping the simulation. Prepping only video wastes the first gate, which is analytical.
Compare adjacent screens before you finalize prep: Barclays for the shorter UK-bank variant, Citi for the technical-twist contrast, and Deutsche Bank for the European-bank gate structure.
Reported HSBC questions to rehearse
These prompts recur across candidate reports. Rehearse each from a skeleton, never a script:
- Why HSBC, and why this specific programme.
- Tell me about yourself and how you would contribute to the bank.
- A time you adapted to change, tagged to Open.
- A time you took responsibility for a result, tagged to Dependable.
- A time you worked across difference toward a shared outcome, tagged to Connected.
- Global Markets tracks: a piece of market news you followed, explained with a view.
