UBS runs HireVue across its Graduate Talent Program, internships, and off-cycle roles, and the screen changes shape by division. Most tracks are motivation plus behavioral with about 30 seconds to prepare and up to 2 minutes to answer. Markets tracks stretch to 7 questions and add the decider: a stock pitch. Everything below is built around that split.

For the wider banking map, see the investment banking HireVue questions guide. For the rep method behind every prompt here, use how to practice HireVue.

Your invite overrides the table. Zurich, London, Milan, Madrid, and Singapore reports already differ on counts and timings. Train the 7-question variant: stamina across a full set is a separate skill from nailing one answer.

The UBS questions to expect

Reported prompts cluster into three lanes. Build one skeleton per lane before you record anything:

  • Motivation. Why UBS, why this role, what sets UBS apart from competitors. Aim at the firm's actual business (wealth management scale, the Graduate Talent Program's 18 to 24 months) and connect one concrete thing you have done.
  • Behavioral and fit. Past experiences, teamwork, overall fit. One situation sentence, three action moves starting with "I", a quantified result. Most questions are not role-specific, so reusable stories carry across divisions.
  • Markets twist. Pitch a stock: state buy, hold, or sell with two reasons inside two minutes. Follow one name for two weeks, know its drivers, and take the side you can defend rather than the consensus side.

Say each answer out loud against a timer on HireVue Practice before you record.

What comes before and after the HireVue

Before: the online application plus cognitive and personality assessments on most tracks. Clear those gates with timed reasoning sets before spending energy on video reps.

Graduate Talent Program candidates should shape every motivation answer around the program's 18 to 24 months: structured rotations, mentorship, and professional qualifications. Interviewers hear generic enthusiasm daily. What stands out is a candidate who can name what the program's length buys: time to rotate across divisions, a mentor relationship that compounds, and qualifications that outlast the first role. Write one sentence on each before you record, and weave all three into your why-UBS answer. Off-cycle and internship candidates can use the same shape at smaller scale: name what the specific program's length buys, from project ownership to conversion chances, rather than praising the bank in general.

After: a phone interview with an associate, then further rounds or straight to Superday depending on program. Motivation answers get probed deeper live, so keep every claim consistent. Asset management candidates report fit-heavy screens; banking candidates should keep the stock pitch warm all the way through.

A prep plan that respects the order

  1. Assessments first. Timed reasoning sets daily. The video never happens if this gate fails.
  2. Story bank second. Five STAR skeletons from the common questions bank: motivation, teamwork, fit, failure, why-this-role.
  3. Stock pitch third. One name, two weeks of attention, a 2-minute spoken pitch recorded five times until the reasoning fits the window.
  4. Full mock last. Record a 7-question set in one sitting at 2 minutes per answer, single takes, then rerun only the failed prompts once.

What gets UBS candidates cut

  • No markets diet on a markets track. The pitch exposes two weeks of neglect in two minutes.
  • Generic motivation. Fits every bank and therefore none. Name UBS' actual business.
  • Fading on question six. Stamina across seven questions needs its own rehearsal.
  • Inconsistent live rounds. Reusing HireVue stories with contradictions under associate follow-ups.

Compare adjacent screens before you finalize prep: Barclays for the shorter markets-view variant, Citi for the technical-twist contrast, and BlackRock for the asset-management overlap.

Reported UBS questions to rehearse

These prompts recur across candidate reports. Rehearse each from a skeleton, never a script:

  • Why did you apply to UBS specifically, and why this role.
  • What sets UBS apart from its competitors.
  • A time you worked in a team toward a difficult outcome.
  • A past experience that proves you fit the program's demands.
  • Walk me through your resume, landing on the two experiences that predict success here.
  • Markets tracks: pitch a stock with a buy, hold, or sell view and two supporting reasons.
