What should your Bain cover letter structure look like?
Opening: your trajectory in two sentences
Do not open with "I am writing to apply." State where you are, where you are going, and why the gap is closed by Bain. Two sentences, maximum three. The goal is to give a recruiter enough context to read the rest with the right frame.
Why Bain: one paragraph that survives the substitution test
Substitute "McKinsey" for "Bain" in your draft. If the paragraph still works, rewrite it. Bain-specific differentiators worth citing:
- The private equity practice: Bain advises on more than half of all buyout transactions above $500 million globally, and PE accounts for nearly a quarter of Bain's revenue. If you are targeting PE, this is the clearest firm-specific signal available.
- Local staffing model: Bain staffs teams from the office closest to the client, so your regional commitment is more meaningful here than at firms with global mobility models.
- Results Delivery practice: Bain tracks implementation alongside strategy. If your background is operations or transformation, tie to this directly.
- The "Bainie" culture and mutual accountability norms: only relevant if you have genuine collaboration evidence to support it. Do not reference the culture without a story.
Proof: two paragraphs, one number each

Use the XYZ format: accomplished X, measured by Y, by doing Z. One story should show problem-solving or analytical judgment. One should show leadership or collaborative delivery.
Do not choose stories that only show you performed as an individual. If both paragraphs read as solo achievements, replace one with a story where your contribution enabled a team outcome.
Close: one connecting sentence and a request
Name the office explicitly. Bain's local staffing model means a vague close ("any office in the region") signals you did not do the research. Say which office, give one phrase of regional intent, and close with a request for consideration.
Does addressing your letter by office actually matter at Bain?
Yes. Bain is organized around local offices more than McKinsey or BCG. The firm's staffing model keeps teams close to clients geographically, which means the Boston office recruits differently from the Singapore office. Naming your target office tells the recruiting team you have decided where you want to build your career, which is real information. Generic letters addressed to "The Recruiting Team" read as hedge applications.
If you are genuinely open to multiple offices, pick the one where you have the strongest regional case, whether a prior internship, a language, or a specific industry cluster in that market, and write to that office. You can note flexibility in one phrase. Do not list three offices in the same letter.

This example is for a candidate targeting the Boston office with a background in healthcare operations.

Generic motivation language
Phrases like "I want to work on challenging problems with smart people" or "Bain's collaborative culture attracted me" appear in hundreds of letters per cycle. They add no signal because they apply to every consulting firm. Replace them with one specific thing about Bain that connects to your background.
Solo achievement stories only
Bain's operating principles are built around collective accountability. Two paragraphs about things you achieved alone will make you look like a poor culture fit even if the numbers are impressive. At least one story should show you enabled a team outcome.
Missing regional intent
A letter with no mention of an office, or with vague language like "open to any location," signals you are hedging. Bain recruiters filling seats in a specific office need evidence you want to be there.
Cover letter as resume summary
Restating what your resume already says in paragraph form wastes the reader's time. The letter should add context, not summarize credentials already visible one page over.
