Case Interview Synthesis: Recommendations, So-Whats, and Closing Answers
Use this hub when your analysis is decent but your conclusions sound like summaries instead of recommendations.
Late-case performance: candidates need to turn facts into a clear recommendation under time pressure.
Answer shape
Lead with the answer, then support it
A synthesis is not a recap of every analysis step. It is a decision-ready answer. Start with the recommendation, give two or three reasons, call out the main risk, and state the next step.
- Recommendation first.
- Reasons second.
- Risk and next step last.
So-what
Every data point needs business meaning
Candidates often stop at the observation. Stronger answers translate the observation into what it means for the client and what the team should do next.
- Say what changed.
- Explain why it matters.
- Connect it to the client's decision.

Quick answers
What is synthesis in a case interview?
It is the ability to turn analysis into a clear recommendation, with support, risks, and next steps.
How is synthesis different from summarizing?
A summary repeats what happened. A synthesis answers what the client should do and why.
